Would this work only for the anchor points of threads (where they actually
started) or would it be possible to also identify other "sub anchors" like when
the topic/subject changed, or when a thread shifted to a different primary
posting group? (presumably both a bit harder to implement)

I use it a lot. I think it's definitely worth the space it takes. How much of a
performance hit is it?
