I agree, and with good reason. Until just now I was under the
impression that a paid membership WAS required. After seeing the link to
the membership sign-up page, it never even occured to me that it wasn't
required for posting. I've even had people tell me that "you don't need to
pay for a membership", but the sign-up page clearly states that it's a $10
minimum, so I just assumed the fee was applied after they'd joined and not
required of anyone who could be grandfathered in with a free membership.
My suggestion would be to add a description to the top of the sign-up
page stating what membership is and is not required for, and explaining how
to sign up for the free services.

(And yes, "Purple Dave" is, for all intents and purposes, my "real" name,
unless you're the government, the bank, or my family. Even my boss and most
of the regular visiting sales reps refer to me as "Purple".)
