The default behavior of the web-based news post (and many news readers) is
to quote the entire previous message. Many posters follow this advice on the
web-based posting page:
"The original message you are replying to is quoted with ">" to help readers
of your message understand the context. You'll want to keep parts of the
quoted message, but you should delete portions which aren't relevant to your
reply...."
Is there room for a technical solution to help the few that do not follow
this advice?
One possibility is to detect it at post time:
- If the posted message quotes the previous message in the thread in its
entirety (either at the beginning or end of the message), and if the quote
is more than 5 (or 10) lines long then replace the quote with the first 3
(or 5) lines and a link to the prior message in the thread.
Another possibility would be to give the web-based poster an option to
toggle between the full-quoted message and an abbreviated version. The
algorithm could look like:
- If the quoted message is greater than 5 lines long, replace the quote with
an abbreviated version, and include a button on the posting page to toggle
back to the original unabbreviated version.
