Todd,
The introduction of FTX into LUGNET postings has caused the NNTP
interface to be much less useful than it formerly was. The FTX codes
are mostly readable, but can be awkward.
I have a solution to the problem that should make all users happy, but
will take up more disk space on Lugnet:
Store all FTX files as MIME messages. Use multipart/alternative, with
text/plain and text/html versions converted from the FTX original, and
the original FTX as an attachment.
When this is sent over NNTP or email people will see it however their
client can best render it. Text-based clients will use the text/plain
version; browser-based clients can use the text/html version; and the
LUGNET web interface can use the FTX attachment.
Of course you'd have to convert all existing FTX messages, but I think
this would be a fairly simple batch job.
This avoids the inconvenience of having to store multiple files per
message, and of having the NNTP server convert on the fly to plain
text or HTML as had been previously discussed.
