This has been proposed before - however, authuntication is not so much about protecting the users, it's more about protecting the community. Even if you don't care that someone is posting in your name, when that allows people who have been kicked out to post, it's hurting the community. Read through the admin.general archives, you'll find very long discussions about all this.
