<trimming newsgroups... :-)>
I end up with mixed feelings on the subject of where posts should go. On
the one hand, I do think lugnet.general is overused. On the other, I'm
reading from the web more and more, and usually just use the top level
view, which effectively returns Lugnet to being a single newsgroup
(which does have some filtering, though I really don't use it). Where I
use a newsreader the most is when I'm going through a theme group trying
to update my links pages (since I tend to be lazy and not immediately
add links to my links pages when I read the news in the first place).
In the end, I do think the separate groups is valuable, even if much of
the time it doesn't really impact what I read. I would like to see
.general watched for areas which need new groups. I'd also like to see
some action taken to remind folks of the new groups (lugnet.fun is a
prime example, now that it exists, much of the traffic in .general
belongs there).
I also wonder if it would be worthwhile to require posts which are
cross-posted to .general to have follow-ups set (the implication if
you're crossposting .general is that you do feel that your message has
wider appeal than the specific theme). This policy might also be
appropriate for lugnet.build (on the other hand, I don't tend to look in
lugnet.build etc. very often, it seems like most messages are
crossposted there). I do feel though that if you are posting on a
multi-theme topic that it is appropriate for discussion to stay in all
the appropriate groups until it starts to diverge into areas truly
specific to a particular theme (so for example, if I made a model of a
castle in the UK [I'm thinking of a castle which I think is in Wales -
my mother and sister brought me a postcard of it when they took a
vacation in the UK several years ago] which has a train tunnel under it,
I might crosspost to both .castle and .trains. When the discussion
starts to be just about the castle or just about the trains, the other
group should be trimmed).
Another thing I'd love to see to make life easier for those using
newsreaders to see a complete thread no matter where it goes would be
the URL of the message automatigically inserted (though I'm not sure
where it should be put, it will be less usefull if I have to "show all
headers" to see it).
