One random thought from out of the blue: Several people have commented
that they now primarily use the web interface for reading. When this is
used, you see the whole thread no matter where it has wandered. Perhaps
the web interface should by default not show the posts which are not in
the same group as the currently displayed post. A button (or cookie
option) would change it to full thread view. The connections which move
out of the current group could be shown as a dotted line leading to
nothing.
Another thing relative to large threads. Could we have an option of
showing the dots for some locality around the current post? The huge
threads are very difficult to read on the web (and can be difficult to
read with a newsreader if you want to follow branches out of the current
group).
