My apologies if I'm missing something, or if this has already been addressed,
but I was wondering if there is anyway to get notification of activity in a
newsgroup here?  Short of subscribing to it in e-mail of course.  It's just
that it seems to me that a lot of the local area groups you've set up here have
so little activity in them that it's easy to forget about, or miss on the
traffic report.

There is currently no way to get notification of activity in a newsgroup
except by subscribing to it by mail.  <http://www.lugnet.com/news/mail/>
I'm subscribed by mail to all 583 loc.* groups and don't look at them in my
newsreader.

If there was a way for you to get notified (short of subscribing via
e-mail), what would be the most convenient way for you to be notified?

(BTW, the traffic report is a _great_ resource - I'm not sure if it's your
idea, or if you grabbed it from elsewhere, but kudo's to whoever came up with
it)

As far as I know, it was my idea, but it probably came from something I saw
somewhere else once upon a time, maybe related or maybe unrelated.  I know
one thing that definitely inspired it was the Unix load average tracking
which is reported by 'w' and 'uptime', for example:

   6:54PM  up 40 days,  6:16, 1 user, load averages: 0.16, 0.11, 0.09

The three numbers at the far right are the average CPU usage in the past 1
minute, 5 minutes, and 15 minutes.  (Actually, it's the number of waiting
processes, but you can think of it as CPU utilization.  A load average of
1.00 means 100% utilization.)
