That's a good question. The answer is simple, yet complicated... First, here
are a couple related threads from a while back:
http://www.lugnet.com/admin/general/?n=1244&t=i&v=a
http://www.lugnet.com/general/?n=3917&t=i&v=a
Basically, all we need to do is come up with a good solid name that'll hold
for a very long time, and then use that name. That's the simple part (but
unfortunately also the complicated part :-).
After much much much thought about this and related groups, what makes the
most sense, IMHO, is organizing the groups in parallel with the official
product line. If you agree with that philosophy, let's go back for a moment
and revisit the list from earlier, now that new products have been announced
and the official LEGO Media International site is starting to show some
structure...
According to www.legomedia.com, there are currently 7 LEGO Media titles:
Product Name Official Product URL
----------------- -------------------------------------
LEGO Creator http://www.legomedia.com/creator/
LEGO Loco http://www.legomedia.com/loco/
LEGO Chess http://www.legomedia.com/chess/
LEGO Racers http://www.legomedia.com/racers/
LEGO Rock Raiders http://www.legomedia.com/rockraiders/
LEGO Friends http://www.legomedia.com/friends/
LEGOLAND http://www.legomedia.com/legoland/
These 7 products could be mapped to LUGNET groups quite naturally as follows:
Resource Homepage Newsgroup name (or hierarchy)
-------------------------------------------- -----------------------------
http://www.lugnet.com/lego/ lugnet.lego.*
http://www.lugnet.com/lego/media/ lugnet.lego.media.*
http://www.lugnet.com/lego/media/creator/ lugnet.lego.media.creator
http://www.lugnet.com/lego/media/loco/ lugnet.lego.media.loco
http://www.lugnet.com/lego/media/chess/ lugnet.lego.media.chess
http://www.lugnet.com/lego/media/racers/ lugnet.lego.media.racers
http://www.lugnet.com/lego/media/rockraiders/ lugnet.lego.media.rockraiders
http://www.lugnet.com/lego/media/friends/ lugnet.lego.media.friends
http://www.lugnet.com/lego/media/legoland/ lugnet.lego.media.legoland
The name on the right is of course the newsgroup name, fitting into the larger
hierarchy. The name on the left is the newsgroup's homepage on the website,
and also a spot where assocated links and other related information can go.
Note that in this scheme of things, other whole TLG product lines (such as
LEGO DUPLO, LEGO PRIMO, LEGO DACTA, etc.) fit nicely into similar sub-
categories:
Resource Homepage Newsgroup name (or hierarchy)
-------------------------------------------- -----------------------------
http://www.lugnet.com/lego/ lugnet.lego.*
http://www.lugnet.com/lego/duplo/ lugnet.lego.duplo
http://www.lugnet.com/lego/duplo/toolo/ lugnet.lego.duplo.toolo
http://www.lugnet.com/lego/primo/ lugnet.lego.primo
http://www.lugnet.com/lego/dacta/ lugnet.lego.dacta
http://www.lugnet.com/lego/znap/ lugnet.lego.znap
etc. etc.
The importance of keeping the web-URL hierarchy coherent and parallelized with
the official product line hierarchy is apparent when you consider general
browsing and the integration of the groups with the sets DB, for example.
