Just because you and some others dont accept that Marketing thought it was a
good idea to change the colors doesnt make it not the real reason.

True, but the only two things weve heard so far were that people were
complaining that those three colors didnt match the rest of the color
pallete, and that focus groups agreed. Not only is the idea that the old
grey/brown colors match the rest of the color pallete utterly false, but the
first any AFOL ever heard of complaints to that effect was after we complained
about the color change. Focus groups are also highly suspect when conducted by
someone who has a desire to prove his/her belief (the most famous instance was
the Pepsi Challenge, which proved that Pepsi tastes better than Coke...even
though Coke continues to hold the commanding market share...and received severe
backlash for switching to a formula that tasted more like Pepsi). And the utter
lack of advance PR on this subject, combined with the continued lack of New:
Improved Colors! labels go a long way to undermine what scant credibility the
official reasons might have had. If its entirely based around making the
customers happier, youd think theyd have started mentioning it somewhere
besides LUGNET, since theyve had over four months of people pointing out the
complete disparity between their statements and their actions in that regard.
For the record, I dont doubt that they received complaints about the old
colors. I do, however, doubt that they havent received as many complaints in
the last four months over the new colors as they have in the last four years
over the old ones. I also dont doubt that the focus groups were led by the
nose into believing that they liked the new colors better than the old colors.
I do, however, doubt that the focus groups extended beyond any casual LEGO fans
for whom an annual LEGO budget might run $50 per child, or included anyone who
actually buys LEGO sets for his/her own personal use. Finally, I dont doubt
that the two official reasons given werent involved in the decision to change
those three colors. I do, however, doubt that weve heard the whole story, and
with each passing month Im growing even more doubtful that we ever will.
