Do you see the main use in such a group being:  (a) focusing on the project
at hand and being able to go into lots of esoteric programming & interface
issues and that sort of thing, or (b) avoidance of flames in the main cad
groups?

(a) as well as other Mac programs, like Gryphon Bricks and LEGO CAD.

LEGO CAD runs on the Mac?  (Like you mean the one TLG put out in 1997?...wow, I
always thought that was PC-only.)

Did you have in mind a "user oriented" group for Mac CAD users or "developer
oriented" group for Mac CAD developers?

Another angle on the question:  What is your estimation of the popular
demand today for a mailing list dedicated to developing a Mac clone of
LDraw (such as the one proposed a few days ago in RTL)?

Personally, I don't know what the demand is because I don't really read the
lugnet.cad groups. I scan them because most of the topics relate to the PC,
like LDRAW. Maybe a Mac newsgroup will draw mnore people out. It doesn't have
to be dedicated only to making a clone. It can be for other programs like the
ones I listed above.

Hmm.  I think an actual LDraw-style Mac app (working or under construction)
would do a lot more to draw people out than simply the existence of a separate
discussion group would.  A case could be made that Gryphon Bricks is already
"there" for Mac people, but it's no where near (and will never be) as good as a
Mac clone of LDraw would be because LDraw parts are based on real LEGO
elements.  :-)

Mac users are *totally* welcome here, just as any other platform.

If the interest is already a-brewin' out there, then I'd say a new group
for this (probably called lugnet.cad.dev.mac) would make a lot of sense,
especially if it helped generate interest and helped the project organizers
focus.  Also, although a new group sometimes means a loss to related groups,
the loss is minimized if the new group is a newsgroup right nextdoor rather
than a isolated mailing list.

I predict it may not cause a loss but rather a gain because not a lot of
discussion goes toward Macs.

I think the best way to raise awareness and enthusiasm would be a group devoted
to the creation of a Mac clone of LDraw.  Or a cross-platform port of LDraw II
-- but I have no idea where that stands in terms of code ownership/sharing/
collaboration.  Perhaps .cad.dev is already the perfect place for hashing out
the details of a Mac clone/port, or perhaps it needs its own a sub-group
because of traffic or esoterica/focus.  Dunno.

If LDraw II is going to be cross-platform code (Linux please please please!)
then it would probably benefit everyone most if development teams stayed in as
close contact as possible.
