MOTIVATION
==========

We would hereby like to open up the floor for discussions and ideas -- an
online brainstorming session, if you will -- about how we can take LUGNET
to the next level -- from a part-time hobby site into a serious full-time
adventure.  Running a site as popular as this is truly a full-time job, and
then some.

I'm no professor myself, nor am I a millionaire. But if it's encouragement
and ideas you want... here's some from me :) -

This can be done and if you lead it in the right direction, it will be what
you ultimately want it to be! Stay focused and motivated, the hard part is
almost over... just hang in there and listen to your members needs and wants.

At present, both of us are holding day jobs.  When we began LUGNET, back in
1997-98, we were living off of savings and squeaking by, taking odd jobs and
selling LEGO to folks online.  Three years of that landed us both in debt,
however, requiring us to re-enter the traditional workforce and effectively
preventing us from committing the same amounts of time that we were able to
spend in the early years.

Most of us work... but would still be happy to help.  What about an area
that is run by members?  Where members get to submit things and then have
someone scan through and post them up (sensible things of course).

Suzanne has been filling the role of general site administrator since last
summer, in her spare time, while Todd has been working behind the scenes on
various daily and weekly maintenance chores, in his spare time.  Dan and Jenn
Boger and Steve Bliss and Joshua Delahunty and others have also volunteered
huge amounts of their spare time and energy into keeping things running and
improving behind the scenes.

Where we need to go from here is to solidify the financial foundations of the
site and find a way to create a full-time employment position for Suzanne as
general administrator, so that things can move forward in a serious way.
Additionally, it would be very attractive if we could find some way to
financially compensate the community's hard-working volunteers.

I see Todd and Sue as having all the right information and ideas, they just
seem to need a little help or some extra encouragement.  I'd be happy to
help out in anyway if ever needed.  They have a great site and people
respect that.   I think a few things regarding the site need to be alive and
kicking, that now deem a little dead and dormant.  Maybe this isn't quite
the case, but they do seem to lack a little attention.  I've seen threads
about people asking for their packets, crosswords, Site of the week thing
etc... this is cool, if that's what people want.  If there is no time for
Todd, Sue etc to do this, then I'm quite happy to help in those areas.  I
might not be the big name in the sky, but I'm willing to help and put in
some dedication time

LUGNET's Membership system has worked well -- and continues to work well --
in keeping LUGNET alive at a basic subsistence level; getting the ISP bills
paid is no problem.  But the Membership system isn't a model that supports
a full-time administrative position -- not without there being significantly
larger numbers of adult fans out there.

Offer the fans/members something to encourage them and attract them to this
site and to become a proud member.

So we need to get creative.

Yep! :) there are lots of things to do (my head is full of ideas).

And we invite you to offer your thoughts.

Done and you know where to find me for more ;)

In a perfect world, The LEGO Company would recognize what LUGNET has done
for it by contributing meaningful amounts of cash periodically.  The LEGO
Company has shown very little interest in this, however.

In a perfect world, it would be brilliant to see some fundraising idea come
from LEGO where they make a set especially made, just for Lugnet. This could
be sold to members as part of a new member package or to current members,
renewing membership.  Or alternatively, it could be sold for a little more
than the breakdown cost that members would get.

Now, if LEGO decided dead against this, why not make custom sets?  Special
sets made and designed by fans, for fans.  With the Limited Edition set
number being their Lugnet #, so then it's a personalized set.  This way
there should be no complaining as to who gets what.  Cause your own number
is what would make it the best.

I, of course support this idea highly ;)

Clearly, it is up to us the community to keep the dream alive.  Getting to
the next level is not going to be easy.  Yet, looking back, getting the site
off the ground in the first place five years ago once felt like an impossible
dream.  We are grateful for all the support shown us over the years through
the site's seemingly countless growing pangs, through our own personal life
tribulations, and through the past few months of uncertainty.

A beaming site with beaming members who are thriving on the enjoyment and
excitement of LEGO (and what this site could bring them), is a great goal,
because this breeds more members who see the site as worth while and
something they want to be apart of.  Maybe with the determination from the
fans this may help boost LEGO along a little to giving the site a little
more attention.  Then again, they may wish to deal with this on their own
site (which seems to be somewhat, the case?).

Thanks... Mel
