I remeber there being some kinda control character like a line feel or something. This is due to the difference in environments, DOS, unix, etc. This might be the cause of your problem.   Sonar problems
 
I have The Polaroid sonar system hooked up as stated in the readme file that is on the web page but I can't get it to work. (...) Sure, over 20Mhz or so. I've breadboarded 16Mhz 80286 systems on these things. Don't use the long connections (along the edge) of the board for signals.
