I was curious about the weight. I have a suspicion that the new battery-powered IR motors would not be able to perform well at all with 7-wide stuff. All the more reasont to save 9V trains!

Another side topic I have not noticed to be mentioned here in Lugnet is the following:

These new wheels (as shown by Heiner Berg from his 7898 set) have no bore hole reaching through the wheel, but they have a plastic tip which will be the contact zone between frame and wheel. The metal part is shortened in comparison to todays wheelsets.

This means we will NOT have a tribological contact between polished metal and the plastic frame (because the axle is basically touching in the contact zone of the tip and not in the cylindrical shaft).

That pair of metal against plastic is known for showing very low wear amounts and keeping itself polished. It has a friction coefficient of roughly estimated 0.1 ... 0.4 depending on age and lubrication due to molding form lubricants on the plastic surface.

Instead we will have now a contat with plastic rubbing on plastic. This friction pair is usually known for having very high friction coefficients (could be easily up to 1.0) and high whear (especially under “heavy” loads).

So goodbye 7-wide, good bye 8-wide. Those heavier trains will never run on wheelsets like these, since the running resistance will be increased by factor 2...4. Not to mention the fast occurance of wear and new weak IR-controlled motors....

(...) Great. These answers, along with the info Ben provided, are the answers I was hoping for. You've really given my the urge to get some 7-wide equipment of my own. Of course wanting it and being able to build it are two different things :-) If (...) (18 years ago, 28-Jun-06, to lugnet.trains, FTX)
