Remote Control of 3 motors with Scout & Micro Scout

You can remotely control each of 3 motors in both directions with a Scout
and a Micro Scout.

You need these parts:  1) Mindstorms Remote Control,  2) Mindstorms Scout,
3) Mindstorms Micro Scout,  4) 2 motors,  5) Lego Fiber Optic Cable (optional).

You can build and remotely run your 3-motor Technic model without a PC: no
programming and no IR tower needed.  Of course, the wireless Remote Control
can also run 3 motors from a stand-alone RCX, but let's play without the RCX
this time.

The Remote Control's A and B buttons run each of the Scout's 2 external
motors in both directions.  The Remote Control's C buttons cause the Scout's
red LED to send commands to the Micro Scout's light sensor to run the Micro
Scout's built-in motor in both directions.  So, from a distance of about 30
feet ( 10 meters) the wireless Remote Control can run each of three motors
on the same model separately or at the same time in either direction.

The optional Fiber Optic Cables let you put the Micro Scout 4 inches (10 cm)
away from the Scout.  See below, "... conduit ... ," to build a 2-cable
pipe.  Without the FO cables you must place the Scout's red LED next to the
Micro Scout's light sensor.

Parts Availability:

"Remote Control" comes in the Mindstorms "Ultimate Accessory Set" #3801 and
separately from Pitsco under RoboLab Components at
http://www.pldstore.com/catalog.cfm.  It controls the motors and many other
functions of the Scout and the RCX, with or without programs downloaded to
the p bricks.

"Scout", Lego's intermediate microprocessor "brick," comes in the Robotics
Discovery Set #9735.  It has a built-in programs that do not require a PC
and has a built-in light sensor.

"Micro Scout", Lego's simplest microprocessor "brick," comes in the Dark
Side Developers Kit #9754 and the Droid Developers Kit #9748.  It has
built-in programs that do not require a PC and has a built-in light sensor.

"Fiber Optic Cable" comes in accessory pack #5227 from LSAH and all sets
with "FOS."   FOS (Fiber Optic System) rotary 8-LED assembly with fiber
optic cables comes in the Extreme Creatures Expansion Set #9732, the  Fiber
Optic Multi Set #8456, the Space Shuttle #8480, Interstellar Star Fighter
#6979, and probably a few other sets.

For more Lego documentation on the Remote Control with the Scout and Micro
Scout, you should do the following:
1)  Go to http://mindstorms.lego.com/products/rds/hackers.asp and look at
the picture of the Scout connected to a Micro Scout via Fiber Optic Cable.
2)  Click the link to navigate to the Scout Software Developer Kit at
http://www.legomindstorms.com/scout_sdk/.  Don't worry about the title
saying "Software" because part of the doc explains the stand-alone Scout
with the Remote and Micro Scout.
3)  Click Go to Download Pages, etc and download the file "ScoutSDK.zip".
4)  After downloading, extract the file "ScoutSDK.pdf".
5)  In the extracted PDF document, titled "Lego Mindstorms Scout Software
Developers Kit User Guide & Reference," go to page 19.  Read the section,
"The  Scout and the LEGO Remote," through page 20
6)  Go to page 13.  In the section, "VLL Output," near bottom, read through
paragraph 3 on page 14 about remote control to the Micro Scout via the Scout.
7)  If you want a good illustrated and introductory description of the
Scout, read pages 11 - 20.
