I've seen the Silver Champion in a couple catalogs, and online why xmas
shopping, and always thought it was impressive, but the price tag has always
turned me off to buying one. Untill... I was strolling through the local
TRU over the weekend and happened to see a few 8458's on the shelf. And was
just blown away by the size, and how incredibly cool it looked. But still
turned off by the price I left and went home. While at home I couldn't stop
thinking about it, so I got back in my car, drove back to TRU, and bought
it! ($183 later ouch! damn tax...) This is the first set I've bought in
almost 5 years, my last set being the 8880. (still built and on my shelf
today! just an awsome set!)
Anyways, 8 hours later, the car was finished. And well, I wasn't that
impressed, I mean functionallity wise, I was just expecting more. And
stregnth wise, well the model just seams flakey, and like its going to fall
apart. I was kinda dissapointed. Size wise it is just awsome though! 26
inches long! And then I got my 8880 down off the shelf and set it next to
the 8458, and suddenly was a little more impressed. It also looks
incredible! (although the 8880 is still FAR MORE STURDY!) This is my first
set with the "new" style technic (funny wings, bendable tubes etc..) I no
longer felt like I should of bought a different set. (SW collector series).
I remembered the next day at work that there was an online supplement. So I
checked it out and really liked the model they offered instructions for
online. When I got home later that night I proceeded to tear my newly
assembled car apart to build the model I saw online. But quickly ran into
allot of problems...

The online instructions SUCK! Has anyone really looked at them closely? I
quickly reviewed all of them at work earlier in the day, but didn't pay much
attention to the details of each page. And boy am I sorry I didn't start
till 11pm last night. I ended up finishing at like 3:30 AM! What can I say,
I'm like those Pringles commercials, once you start you can't stop! Of cours
e This should really of only taken like 3 hours at most, but If you've seen
the instruction pages you know why. The graphics are TERRIBLE, low
resolution, very hard to make out, often there are wrong parts called for,
or not called for at all. The colors denoting which tubes/straw peices to
use aren't colored correctly in over half the inventory boxes. And worst of
all, the have you start with the basic Chassis from the Silver Champ, but
DON'T tell you which step you should start from out of your instruction book
that came with the set! (Step 59 if anyone is interested)
Allot of the sub-structures weren't easy to tell how to put together for one
side, So I had to skip ahead to the opposite side to see how to properly put
them together.

Once done though I was MUCH happier with the appearence of the car! I think
the online model has allot of potential, and will be expanding on it later
tonight. Although it is much less sturdy than the original car, not chassis
wise (doesn't seem like there is much I can do about that) but more body
panel wise, allot of the wing panels are held on by only 1 pin/place of
contact. Once again though I hope to fix some of that soon.
That was pretty much it. I'm very happy to be back playing with Lego again,
when I bought the 8880 I was 17, and played with them allot, but dropped
them for my computer (which now has gotten me a good Net Admin Career, and
able to afford these nice $$$ sets) 5 years later, it has just been too
long, and I can't wait to get home tonight and play with my new set!
