Well, it looks like I'm in luck! I stopped by the Wal-Mart on the way home to
pick up a spare A-Wing Fighter, and what do I find inside but the new 2001
LEGO catalog! Sorry, no scans yet, I just upgraded my OS and the driver isn't
working properly, but here's a short description of the classic SW sets. I'll
describe the Ep1 sets in a different message.
7132 - Bespin Cloud Car(TM)
This one looks pretty good. Plenty of orange for those of you who like it!
The only beef I have is with the canopies - they used the same piece as the
Slave 1 (in clear this time instead of smoke) and it's just not rounded enough.
I can't tell anything about the landing gear - probably those 2x2 'space
pillars' again.
7105 - Mos Eisely(TM) Cantina
A tiny little set, like the Lightsaber Duel or Desert Skiff. Tatooine Luke,
Old Obi-Wan with lightsaber, and some bricks and plates that sort of suggest
a
bar. No Han, no Chewie, no Greedo, no walrus guy that gets his arm chopped
off,
no bartender, no NASA astronaut in the background...you get the idea. *sigh*
7143 - AT-ST(tm)
This is probably the best of the 2001 sets. Like the B-Wing, it looks like
they were peeking on the web to see what AFOLs have already done. Any
juniorization is pretty minor, although the thing does suffer from the LEGO
scale
compression thing - it's about 2/3 as tall as it "ought" to be. I can't be
certain, but it *looks* like they used the click-hinges for the legs, which is my
only problem - some of my 99 SW hinges are beginning to wear a little and
don't
hold as strongly. That could turn out to be a problem if you play with the
model
a lot.
It looks like it's piloted by an Imperial Officer - a new 'fig for this year.
Black uniform, black gloves, black hat. Nobody is really surprised by this, I
hope?
7185 - Sandcrawler(TM)
I'm disappointed. Not just at the choice of this as the 'big set' for this
year, but at the execution. It looks like it's mostly made of brown castle-wall
BURPS (OK, these could turn out to be useful, I guess). The Jawas are, of course,
the same size as anyone else. It also includes a Tattoine Luke, a blue R2,
and a
red R2.
The quick-witted among you will already have noticed something missing. Yep.
NO C3P0, AGAIN!!! I don't know how they could have missed putting him in this set!
Then again, I don't know how they could have missed putting him and Chewie in the
Falcon, either. One moment.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Thanks. I just had to get that out. Eric, I'm sure you've already noticed this,
but once again, no Stormtroopers. Are they going out of their way to avoid making
them? Are they afraid kids are going to have battles with their LEGOs? NEWS FLASH!
They already do!!! The closest you're going to get this year is the Imperial Officer
in the AT-ST.
Well, that's about it. Flipping through, I see that Knight's Kingdom is still
around, with what looks like a third faction getting involved (no more
'launching
things', of course, after that whole Nerf lawsuit)...Town still looks Juniorized...
Rock Raiders is gone...Arctic has a couple of new sets but nothing very exciting...
about what you'd expect.
Anyway, it looks like LEGO is holding steady. Maybe *next* year...

(Note: the preceding is a work of satire. Anybody taking it too seriously is
in danger of being eaten by alligators unless they stand on top of their car
and should "weeble weeble weeble" at the top of their lungs for the next half
hour. Thanks.)
