Dear robotics fans, LEGO enthusiasts and LEGOLAND passholders:

On Dec. 2nd, 2001, LEGOLAND California will host a FIRST LEGO League statewide
robotics tournament.  Using LEGO MINDSTORMS robotic creations, 30
different
teams will compete to save a tiny village and its inhabitants from volcanic
destruction.  Deemed the VOLCANIC PANIC, this year’s robotics showdown is sure
to be a lot of fun.

Even more fun, however, is the fact that once the FLL event is over, we want
to open up the VOLCANIC PANIC robotics ‘play’ area to you!   Here’s your
opportunity to operate your very own MINDSTORMS robot in a professionally
created play environment and attempt to beat the best FLL score.

From Dec. 3rd through Dec. 17th, a room in the LEGOLAND Imagination Zone shall
be available for you to reserve or use for your own robotics competition or
play time.  The actual play tables from the FLL event along with the props,
lighting and other amenities will be available for your use.  Additionally,
the best FLL scores will be posted to see if your team or robot can oust the
best.  If you beat the FLL score, your score will be proudly displayed.

To learn more about the FLL challenge and to see the parameters and diagrams
of the play field available at LEGOLAND, check out the following links:
www.legomindstorms.com/fll or www.usfirst.org.   The VOLCANIC PANIC play field
will also be available for your own creative challenge or alternate event.

To get the most enjoyment out of this opportunity, the following guidelines
have been developed to help you plan your event:
1.  You will need to supply your own MINDSTORMS robot(s) and parts. The robots
in our facility have been modified and/or designed to complement our existing
education programs and are not suitable for use in the free range environment
of the VOLCANIC PANIC play field. If you do not own a MINDSTORMS robotics set,
they are available for purchase at the Park’s Big Shop.
2.  LEGOLAND will offer one stand-alone (no internet access) computer with a
MINDSTORMS IR port with RIS 1.5 installed.  You may wish to bring your own
program files to run your robot as on-the-spot programming can take a long
time.  It is preferred that you bring your own laptop computer and IR port.
Although staff will be present in the Imagination Zone area, minimal to no
computer support will be available. Your program files should be stored on a
3.5inch floppy disc or a CD-ROM.
3.  LEGOLAND will offer the robotics VOLCANIC PANIC playroom on a first-come,
first served basis during regular business hours.  Reservations are
recommended but not required. The room may be booked in blocks of 45 minutes
each.  A reservation will guarantee the availability of the play field.  Open
(non-reserved) times will be available for Park guest free-play.  If a
reservation is made and the reserving party does not appear within 15 minutes
after the scheduled time, this will result in a forfeiture and the room will
be made available to Park guests or the next persons on the waiting list (in
the event the room is full).
4.  In order to reserve a room, a minimum of two persons is required, with at
least one person being 17 years of age or older.  Groups of five or more will
require a ratio of at least one adult per five children.
5.  Room reservations can be made by calling  (760) 918-KIDS or by visiting
the MINDSTORMS reservation room in the Park.
6.  The VOLCANIC PANIC play opportunity will not be supervised or facilitated
by LEGOLAND personnel.  Any staffing or structured assistance will need to be
provided by you or your organization.
7.  No food, drinks or smoking will be allowed in the play room area.
8.  The playroom dimensions are approximately 18’ by 18’.  There is seating
for 32 persons (adults/children) and the play field is located in the center
of the room.

We hope you will take advantage of this limited time opportunity to try the
VOLCANIC PANIC and experience the fun of LEGO MINDSTORMS and LEGOLAND
California!

If you have further questions on this opportunity, please call (760) 918-KIDS.

Sincerely,
Ashley Glennon
