We were at Santa's Village today, and I got this set because it was pre-'98,
and it was the only LEGO SYSTEM set in the gift shop.  It was $6.99 Canadian,
which gives it an obvious con- this thing has the highest cost per piece of
anything ever produced in SYSTEM (no research, prove me wrong if you want).
But it did have many interesting parts that I didn't have, having never
purchased in the Indian subtheme, so I eventually bought it (Anyway, its great
training for the outrageous new S@H shipping costs!).  Well, here is what it
is-

1 brown horse, with spots
1 blue saddle
1 1x2 blue brick
1 1x2 blue plate
1 green shrub
1 black rattlesnake
1 feather headdress
1 minifig head/torso, chief
1 red minifig legs, printed
1 black hatchet
1 black spear
1 shield, horse pattern
2 decorative feather pieces, for weapons

There's some good stuff in there.  This is a cross between a figure/animal pack
and an accessory kit.
The horse was neat to get, as it is my first spotted horse.  It is very
detailed, and the blanket is a nice touch.  The eye and mouth are ugly though,
what were they thinking?  Oddly, the nostril is deeper than the solid-coloured
horses.  I like one spotted horse, but one is probably enough.
The minifig is great.  The feather headdress is my all-time favourite minifg
hat!  All the details on these parts is great!  The minifig himself is cool,
every part of him is new to me.  The red markings on his face limit the ammount
of characters you can use it on (I can't think of anything else, really), which
is a shame.  The vest is good though.
The black snake is new to me, although it do have a red one.  The green shrub
is common, I wish they had used a tree stump instead.  The weapons are not new,
but they are less common.  The decorative feather things are neat pieces, they
could be applied to pretty much anything (racecars, spaceships...!)to show that
it belongs to the chief.  Weird is good, right?

Weird stuff: The horse has a target on its behind.  You don't see it on the
box (since its only on one side), its supposed to be a surprise.  It's probably
just the tribe's symbol, but it looks weird- a lot like a target for an enemy
archer!

It's a playable set.  There are three characters, a chief, a horse and a snake.
There are some weapons, and a plant.  The chief apparently rides around hunting
snakes, which can lead to interesting situations.  I like to play with this set
in the van (don't worry, I don't drive!), since there isn't really much to get
lost- it all fits on my lap or in a cup holder.  Of cousre there are so many
unique pieces a loss would be absolutely devestating- but, nothing yet.

Okay, you buy it for parts.  It is not a building set, it is a building helper.
The possibility for alernates is not great, in fact the box shows simple
repostioning of the main models.  Here is some stuff I did today-
- Put the 1x2 blue brick between the chief's torso and legs, making him tall
- Put the feathers on the snake
- Attached the shrub to the spear, and the spear to the saddle, making a flying
machine not unlike a witch's broom
- Variants of the shrub-powered flyer
- More variants
And, well, that's it.  Really, they could have made it more buildable.  For
instance, how about some bricks & plates under the shrub as a little rock?  I
think that'd help a lot.
