You can learn basic LEGO Technic engineering and building from books.

What do you know about the new book, ie, "Brick Layers II ..."?

Pitsco's 2000 catalog has a new book titled "Brick Layers II: Creative
Engineering with Lego Constructions" (Pitsco #D990244 $25).

The new book title's Roman Numeral "...II..." makes it sound like a sequel
to Sheldon Erickson's 1996 book of almost the same title: "Brick Layers:
Creative...".

The first Brick Layers book applies the Technic parts found in the LEGO
educational "Technic I: Comprehensive Simple Machines Set" #1030.   You can
see the building instruction scans for #1030 at www.brickshelf.com to get an
estimate of the parts needed.  The book applies the LEGO parts to different
and very simple models of machines.  It requires other materials usually
found at educational supply stores.  Unlike the title, the book's substance
does not teach brick laying, but instead teaches levers, gears, pulleys, and
structures in math-oriented experimental activities.  Its black line
printing allows easy copying for classroom work.  You can buy the book from
Pitsco (Pitsco #770918 $25) or Amazon or AIMS.  My experienced
recommendation for this first book:  excellent for an adult teaching
children ages 8 - 14; basic for an adult learning some simple LEGO engineering.

The second Brick Layers book (II) applies the Technic parts found in the
LEGO Dacta "Motorized Simple Machines Set" #9630.  Pitsco's catalog
description:  "The activities give students the opportunity to explore areas
of mechanical engineering through simple machines and structural engineering
as they look at the special properties of certain shapes that make them
useful in construction.  Grades 4-9"  This description would also fit the
first book.  The new book has a color cover in the catalog picture.  You can
buy the book from Pitsco.

What do you know about this new book, ie, "Brick Layers II ..."?

Thanks, Miles Gentry

(...) I can't find 1030 (or 9030, in case it was a typ0) at Briskshelf or Pause. Where did you find these scans, Miles? Kevin (24 years ago, 5-Feb-00, to lugnet.reviews, lugnet.build, lugnet.edu, lugnet.dacta, lugnet.build, lugnet.technic, lugnet.books)
