Hello everyone,

We are happy to announce that Brickworld registration is now open. We have been hard at work performing a complete overhaul on the registration process. In response to your feedback in the survey after last year’s event, we have done a couple things to the event. Some items that impact registration:

1.There are now 2 types of registration: Full and light. These are described on the web site. But, essentially, full registration is for someone that is contributing to the event and partaking in the workshops and presentations. Light registration is for families that want to show up Friday afternoon, see the event hall without the public, participate in weekend non-public activities, and learn from the AFOLs and TFOLs.

2.The full registration will be capped at 650 people to keep things from being unmanagable.

3.When you register for the event, you aren’t considered registered until you pay (the new process leads you through this)

4.The event will start on Wednesday evening with opening ceremonies later in the evening. This will lead to having most of the display space available for MoC setup starting on Thursday morning instead of Thursday evening. Essentially, we are spreading the event out a bit so it is more relaxing for everyone. The survey feedback indicated there was too much happening in too small a space in time.

Don’t forget to sign up for your hotel rooms too. Last year the hotel filled up. And, if you are a first time attendee, everyone will tell you that it makes the event a lot more fun to be at the hotel.

You can register at the Brickworld web site. We hope you like the new process and the changes to the event. We are all very excited about Brickworld 2011.

We hope to see you all in Chicago at the Westin North Shore in Wheeling, IL. June 15th through 19th.

Warm Regards, The Brickworld Team

If you are in Washington, DC area this Summer.

Opening This Weekend: LEGO Architecture at the National Building Museum

Posted by Nevin Martell
July 2, 2010

When you’re a kid, there are few better ways to spend an afternoon than playing with LEGO bricks. Maybe you want to build a spaceship, a Viking ship, or a firehouse. Or maybe you’re building something that previously only existed in your imagination.

Or maybe, like me, you grew up and wrote a book about LEGO minifigures.

Adam Reed Tucker has gone one further: He makes a living playing with LEGO. The architectural artist and LEGO Certified Professional (seen above with his work) has made a career creating landmark buildings using LEGO. His mega models–which use up to half a million bricks and can shoot up to 18 feet high–include the Empire State Building, the Space Needle, and the John Hancock Center in Chicago. Now 15 of these brick creations are on display at the National Building Museum as part of “LEGO Architecture: Towering Ambition.”

To celebrate the exhibit, Tucker will be unveiling a brand new creation, which is his take on the White House. Kids–and adults who want to pretend they’re still kids–can purchase a smaller version of the model at the museum store to take home and build themselves.

The exhibition runs through Sept. 5 at the National Building Museum, 401 F St. NW. $5.

Adult Fans Take Lego Creations to a New Level

Adult Fans of LEGO: Earliest enthusiasts come of age and keep right on building

By DIANA MARSZALEK For The Associated Press June 15, 2010 (AP)

Around age 14, Christopher Piccirillo sank into what he calls the “dark ages,” a period in a young person’s life — usually adolescence — when he or she shuns one of the greater joys of childhood: playing with LEGO.

Some five years later, he emerged, with an appetite for the colorful plastic bricks more voracious than that of many kids.

“The possibilities are endless,” says Piccirillo, now 26 and running a business in Phoenix that organizes after-school LEGO clubs. “You can go anywhere you want with it.”

As an adult lover of Lego, Piccirillo is part of a growing community known as Adult Fans of LEGO — AFOL, for short. Executives at The LEGO Group estimate the AFOL world to be 40,000 strong worldwide and growing, as children who grew up using the construction toy become parents themselves.

Adult fans — who hold conventions, organize group meetings, and buy and trade bricks online — account for roughly 5 percent of LEGO sales, says Michael McNally, LEGO North American director of brand relations. They represent the first and second generations of LEGO users; although the Danish company dates back to 1932, the plastic LEGO brick did not debut in the United States until the mid-‘60s.

But from LEGO perspective, adult fans are much more than another way to make money, McNally says. They regularly take LEGO creations to a new level.

Although LEGO bricks are typically sold in sets with instruction manuals, adult fans branch out to build everything from giant model cities and life-size TV characters to abstract art. “We find that a lot of the people have niche focuses, so there are train people and castle people and space people,” says Julie Stern, a LEGO brand manager for North America.

Showing creations online is particularly popular. LEGO videos — including stop-action shorts using Lego characters — make up 2 percent of all videos on YouTube, or more than 2 million videos, with the vast majority created by fans, Stern says.

AFOLs also have created forums such as Mocpages.com for showcasing their models.

One adult fan, Jamie Berard, made such a big impression on Lego’s owner, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, that he was hired as a product designer. Kristiansen — the third-generation owner of the family-owned LEGO company — met Berard at BrickFest in Washington, D.C., where Berard showed a functioning LEGO Ferris wheel, along with other amusement park models.

“When you see these little pieces in such different ways, it’s really mind blowing — and humbling,” McNally says.

Piccirillo, too, has made Lego more than a hobby; it’s a way of life. He not only established his business — there are 600 kids from three Phoenix-area school districts enrolled in his LEGO building programs — but also created a community for fellow enthusiasts. Two years ago, he established an AFOL club, which has more than 50 members, about half of whom attend monthly meetings. Some in the group host events, such as swaps of mini-figures — small LEGO people. Others buy, sell and trade LEGO pieces online.

According to Stern, mini-figures are generally the most prized possession, with some going on eBay for more than $30 each.

“The fans like to customize the mini-figures. Some have even gone so far as to add LED lights,” says Stern.

“Star Wars” figures in particular are perennial hits, she says.

Jenn Wagner, aka the Brick Chick, has a small business in Waterloo, Ontario, selling LEGO parts and pieces that “only serves to make enough money to support my habits in the hobby.”

Wagner, 42, became hooked on LEGO about 10 years ago after buying “Star Wars” sets for her children. Now, she says, LEGO — business, volunteer projects, clubs and conventions — takes up “80 percent or more of my time.” She is involved in orchestrating Canada’s first-ever LEGO fan convention, scheduled for next year in Toronto. (August 2011 event)

Some say the adult onset of LEGO love fulfills childhood career dreams: “If you asked me when I was 12 what I was going to be when I grew up, I was going to be a master model builder,” says Jonathan Bender, a Kansas City, Mo., author, who explores the vast AFOL world in the new “LEGO: A Love Story” (John Wiley and Sons, 2010).

Though Bender initially set out to write as an observer, he quickly found himself swept up in the LEGO world.

“It just became apparent to me that you cannot be in a room with LEGO and not want to play,” he says.

LEGO also cast its spell on Angus MacLane, a 35-year-old Pixar animator who just wrapped up working on the upcoming film “Toy Story 3.” MacLane’s job might already seem as cool as they come — but he says that consulting with LEGO on “Toy Story” products being issued with the movie was a great perk.

A limited edition Buzz Lightyear “CubeDude” — a MacLane-trademarked LEGO figure that he builds and displays online — was distributed as a promotion, to boot.

And despite his artistic day job, MacLane says he still gravitates toward LEGO in his spare time as a means of expressing himself.

“I do have a creative job, but there are always creative compromises, and the work is mostly done sitting in front of a computer,” MacLane says. “With Lego, there are only the limitations of what pieces I have in my LEGO collection.

“I am my own art director and I only build what I want, when I want to.”

BricksNorth where: Downtown Toronto, Ontario Canada at the Delta Chelsea Hotel. when: August 25-28th, 2011

Hello everybody!!

Some of you may have heard that Canada will be getting a LEGO fan convention in 2011 called BricksNorth. I am so pleased to be able to be a part of such a worthwhile enterprise!! I sure hope I can pull this off as Canada has many challenges...as does my schedule! But I am fortunate to have the help of many terrific local AFOLs and the advice of my esteemed fellow North American event coordinators so I’m not too worried. (yet!)

I do have a very very full plate lately and it is of the utmost importance that the BricksNorth website gets put up very soon. So many people seem want to get on the attendance list and I’d like to give them that opportunity as soon as possible. To do so I need your help to get a LOGO designed for the event.

Here’s what I propose! I need ideas from you all. Anyone who submits the chosen idea for the BricksNorth logo will win a $50 gift certificate to be used in my BrickLink store www.thebrickchick.com. IF the winning idea is submitted as finished artwork that needs little revising then the prize increases to $100 to spend in my store. So bring on your imaginative ideas!! I need them desperately so I can get things rolling.

Not much has been decided outside of the dates and venue for this event so it’s wide open to whatever you think this should be. Canadian is an important consideration of course...and the location is Toronto but that needs not play a big role.

The deadline for submissions is Monday June 14th at midnight EST so that my right hand man Jeff Van Winden and I can discuss the results for ten hours on our drive to BrickWorld the following day. LOL

Good luck everyone! And feel free to pass this around or post it to any other forums/groups you frequent. Anything you can do to help is very very much appreciated.

2010: Bricks In Space

Brickworld is only a couple weeks away and you are helping us set records with this year’s event already with a massive 795 registered attendees. While this is incredible, the one record we really love to break every year is the amount of money we collect for the three charities that benefit from the Esther Walner Memorial Charity Auction. To help make sure this happens in 2010, many of you donated T-shirts to use in the making of a quilt for the auction. Thanks to Bunnie Cleland and Barbara Price, we actually have 2 quilts made from these T-shirts.

These quilts are so cool, that we didn’t want them just going to the highest bidder. Instead, we will be raffling tickets to win the quilts with all the raffle proceeds going to the charity auction total. You will be able to buy your raffle tickets for the quilt at the event. But, we wanted to give you a teaser. So, here is a picture of one of the quilts. All we can say is that the picture does NOT do the quilt justice. They are just so awesome in person.

We look forward to seeing you in Chicago!!! Save some money to buy raffle tickets for the quilts.

Regards, the Brickworld Team

Brickworld will be held June 17 - 20, 2010 at the Westin North Shore Hotel in Wheeling, IL (a suburb of Chicago).

Gail,

Thank you for bringing this sad news to the community.

Lawerence’s Lego folder was one I watched closely for updates over the years.

Deepest condolences to his family at this time, from a fan of his creative work and involvement with his local community. I am sure he will be sorely missed by many.

Sincerely Janey Red Brick

Brickworld has also reached almost 600 registered attendees. This sets a new record for attendees and there is still almost a month left to register. Thanks everyone!!

Workshops are almost all lined up. We need to set the times and then we will open up registration for the workshops.

Presentation slots are filling up fast. So, if you would like to contribute your expertise in the form of a 50 minute presentation, please contact us soon.

And, no Brickworld would be complete without a whole pile of really cool stuff for the Esther Walner Memorial Charity Auction. This year is no exception. We have the coolest pile of rare and unique LEGO related items ever for the auction.

The collaborative display coordinators have all asked for more space than ever for each display. And, the World of Lights is back.

This is going to be the best Brickworld so far. You all keep topping yourselves every year.

We look forward to seeing you in Chicago!!!

Translate from Danish to English from Danish Business.DK website. April 2010.

About LEGO Designer Jamie Berard

“I’m probably a bit of a LEGO geek”

He is bitten by a mad LEGO brick. American Jamie Berard live his LEGO dream completely, moved to Billund and develop new models of LEGO. The story of Jamie Berard is the story of a man who pursued his dream, train ride from the driver in Disney World and to Billund and now living on his passion.

From outside the small two-bedroom apartment just one of many that are on the strip in the anonymous storey property in Billund. Door Signs tells us that live here Jamie Berard. Certainly a name that sticks out slightly in Jutland, Billund, but nevertheless a relatively common American name.

Otherwise, revealing nothing behind the door to the resident affected by the LEGO bacillus in a degree, so it almost looks like an obsession. That impression changed abruptly as soon as the door opens. So it is clear, sparkling clear that Jamie Berard is more than just another one of the millions of LEGO fans who found the world over.

Because even if the apartment with her two rooms are not large, so live Jamie Berard actually just in one room. The second room is devoted to Jamie’s dearest possession; LEGO bricks. And there are pads everywhere.

And we are not talking just a few boxes of bricks. We are talking thousands and thousands of bricks that fills the room in the apartment. The walls are covered with bookshelves, which again is full of LEGO and on floors, in window sills - indeed everywhere, the room filled with boxes of LEGO, finished models - old and new in a large mixing.

“I know that it is strange. Most shakes indeed upside down when I tell it, but I have so filled my one room with LEGO. I took all my own models and all my old blocks from home.” says Jamie Berard, who today works as a designer and developer of LEGO.

“I have bricks from 1950. Sometimes we sit and work on new models of LEGO, and it happens that I have to home and retrieve specific blocks, which I have in the apartment, but which is so rare that the company did not even have them anymore.” says Jamie Berard who is 34 years old and has lived in Billund, Denmark since 2007.

When Jamie Berard speaks of ‘home’, so we talk Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Very far from Manchester, in all ways.

Nevertheless, it is in Billund, that Jamie Berard now has his home and his work. Jamie Berard has passion for livelihood, let LEGO bacillus root in working life.

Like being in heaven “For me it’s a bit like being in heaven. To have the opportunity to work in LEGO when building LEGO is of course the best, I know it’s pretty wild.” says Jamie Berard.

Jamie Berard was taken out of LEGO when he was just four years. A box of LEGO in the gift was the beginning of something which, seen from the outside, resembles something of an obsession.

“I was captured by LEGO immediately, and it became more and more interesting. When I got off from school, I sped home to build LEGO, and when I got in high school, was LEGO almost the only thing I went up in. I’m interested me not really for girls and cars would actually prefer home and LEGO building if I could.” says Jamie Berard, with a wry grin.

While some parents might be worried when their child disappeared completely into the LEGO world, so Jamie’s parents supported him all the way in LEGO building.

“I’ve never experienced that my parents or my friends so crooked that I loved to build LEGO. On the contrary, my parents encouraged me to cultivate my interest. But when I got in college, was it a shocking experience for a girl, I am dating when she saw my LEGO collection.” says Jamie Berard, who now lives alone in Billund.

At a very young Jamie Berard began to dream of making LEGO for a livelihood. But the road was long and great resistance.

“I was once asked, what I wanted to do when I grew up, and I remember that I replied that I would either build roller coasters or work for LEGO. The response from my supervisor was that it was impossible.” says Jamie Berard. Instead ended Jamie Berard after college at an engineering college, he did two years but then got the patience up. Resistance or not and regardless of whether the prospects were impossible to spot, he had on - and ideally with LEGO.

“School of Engineering was not right for me, so I left school, traveled to Florida, where I came from Disney. Here I drove monorailtog a day and worked with the park no ears at night. Later I turned, however, back to school and ended up taking a degree in English.” says Jamie Berard.

After much deliberation, the Brickworld Team is excited to announce that the theme for this year’s event is:

2010: Bricks In Space

So, let’s all try to work something “spacey” into our displays somewhere in honor of all things space.

We have worked a LEGO(R) Classic Space look into the two event kits. Pictures of the kits will be posted soon on the Brickworld website. They will be posted in conjunction with the start of merchandise pre-sales for the event.

Start building now and remember to include lighting for the 2nd annual World of Lights Collaboration.

Stay tuned for more information.

The team at Brickworld is excited to announce that registration for the 2010 event at the Westin will open on January 1st. We look forward to seeing everyone in Chicago in June. We are presently updating the web site to provide an improved registration experience. The updates will be rolled into the web site over the next couple weeks and ready for January 1st.

One of the changes will be a modified home page. The home page will show the Brickworld event at the Westin and a new event called Brickworld Indy. Brickworld at the Westin in Chicago is THE convention, THE AFOL event, THE place you want to be.

Brickworld Indy is a new concept. It is a public exhibition only (similar to Saturday and Sunday of the Brickworld convention in Chicago). Brickworld Indy is a partnership between Brickworld and IndyLUG. The intent of the exhibition is to showcase the creations of IndyLUG to the public. So, there is no convention side, no on line registraiton, no raffles, and it is not open for anyone to display. However, it will still be a fun place to hang out on Saturday & Sunday and see friends and we would love to have AFOLs around to enjoy the event.

We hope to see you in June at the Westin for Brickworld 2010!!

The SteerCo is pleased to announce that the James Jessiman
Memorial Award (JJMA) for 2009 will be awarded to Tim Courtney.

Tim's work on behalf of LDraw cannot be understated.  Upon the sudden death of
James, the LDraw community was in turmoil.  Tim spearheaded the effort to create
and launch LDraw.org to enable James' legacy to endure.  As chief spokesman for
LDraw at many fan events, Tim brought an uncountable number of people into the
LDraw community.  Tim also lead the effort to formally organize LDraw.org by
helping to create the Standards Committee, the Steering Committee, and
co-authoring the LDraw.org bylaws.  He, along with the Jessimans, also helped to
create this award to recognize those whose efforts have furthered LDraw.

More information on the JJMA can be found at:

Thanks for posting the link here, Abner! And while yes, I “produced” this short film, it was actually directed by MA Shumin, animated and edited by David Pagano, and the music and sound was composed by Brian Kenney.

As some of you know, I commute across midtown Manhattan to my LEGO studio by bicycle every day, so when I was offered the opportunity to help with this PSA, I was more than happy to help make it a reality. We’ve submitted it to a nonprofit organization here in New York, and if they like it, it might be used “for real”. (Here’s hoping!) :)

LEGO fanatic turns hobby into business

Kyle Peterson sells his customized pieces to fans around the world.

By Pam Cottrel, Contributing Writer
July 26, 2009

Kyle Peterson’s new career started with the end of his “dark ages.” The dark ages, he explains, begin when a teenager doesn’t want friends to know that he still enjoys building with colorful construction blocks. At this point, the teen’s collection is hidden away in one or two hard plastic suitcases in a back of the closet.

Most adult miniblock enthusiasts come out of their dark ages in their early 20s. If they succeeded in keeping their mothers from selling the toys in a garage sale, they get the old sets out, add new stuff, and begin making bigger and better creations.

For Peterson, the dark ages ended when he was a senior at Cedarville University about to finish his degree in business marketing. He saw a new LEGO set in a store and just had to buy it.

“He started buying more and more,” said his wife, Rachel, who also graduated from Cedarville University.

However, Peterson soon found that the items he really wanted were not available on the store shelf. He began to modify pieces, especially the “small-scale modular action figures” — the little people that populate the building block sets.

Most of these miniature figures, also called “minifigs,” were made by LEGO, Mega Bloks, MiniMates and Microman, according to Peterson’s Web site. Minifigs are generic enough to go with just about anything that is built, but some customers, including Peterson, wanted more.

“Originally, the minifig was not to be taken apart,“ Peterson said. “We started swapping and painting body parts to create more detailed minifigs.” Using inkjet printers, he and other enthusiasts created designs and stickers to enhance the customization.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, Peterson was working in Web development and, on his own time, created Web sites for enthusiasts.

With his online partner, Isaac Yue, known in the minifig community as RedBean, and others, he helped develop the Minifig Customization Network, which had “an unofficial fan-created LEGO Web site, not sponsored, authorized or endorsed by the LEGO Group.” It provided links to customization forums all over the world.

“We drew in more people with tricks, tips, hints and tutorials about customization,” said Peterson, who is known as Armothe in the minifig community.

Peterson and Yue started designing and sculpting such items as specialized helmets and unique weapons. The minifig community loved it. Peterson began hearing from minifig community members who wanted the customized pieces he was making.

In response, the two worked “both independently and together,” investigating plastic injection molding. Yue had been selling accessories out of the United Kingdom. When he moved to Hong Kong, he found a manufacturer, but handling orders and shipping was a challenge.

The two entrepreneurs pooled their resources and started BrickForge.com, a Web site that now gets five million page views a month. Mad River Twp. is the home of BrickForge. Kyle, Rachel and their two sons relocated there three years ago attracted, they said, by the rural community and good schools.

In a minifig-filled room they call Armothe’s Lair, Kyle Peterson creates custom minifigs and designs new customizations. There, “Monte Python and the Holy Grail” minifigs hang out on the same table with “Star Wars” minifigs and his signature minifig, Armothe.

In Hong Kong, Yue adds his creative input, then manages the plastic injection molding. The parts are then shipped to Peterson, who markets the parts through the Web site, www.BrickForge.com. The site has a forum and store, and is a veritable wellspring of information about minifig customization.

This is where it becomes a family operation. From a colorful wall of tiny parts bins in the basement, Rachel packages 100 to 200 orders each week. There are 70 different products in as many as 20 different colors. Inventory nightmares are prevented by the Web site keeping a constant count.

Shipping is not a simple process since more than half of the orders go to foreign countries and must have customs paperwork attached. Petersons’ sons help out a bit by stamping return addresses on the padded envelopes. Rachel takes the packages to Enon, where the post office takes all the international shipping in stride.

“The people at the Enon Post Office are very friendly,” explained a grateful Peterson.

BrickForge has been so successful that Kyle recently resigned from his regular job in order to devote his full energy to the growing business.

The Petersons make special appearances at events such as Brick World, a LEGO fan convention in Chicago.

Meanwhile, products are being added monthly. A minifig motor scooter made its debut July 6. Pliable holsters and bandoliers were also added. Soon stickers for minifig customization will be on the site.

Now that Peterson is devoting full-time attention to the venture, expectations are high about what he might make next.

Thank you again for registering to attend Brickworld this year! We are looking forward to a dymanic event this weekend. To kick things off, we just received final confirmation that WGN-TV will be visiting Brickworld for their “Around Town” segment on Friday, June 19.

For those who aren’t from Chicago, WGN is a well watched channel with a 3 hour morning news show. Typically, the “Around Town” segment consists of multiple small segments throughout the news cast.

The WGN truck will arrive at 6 a.m. and begin taping shortly thereafter. All are encouraged to visit the ballrooms and their MOC’s during the taping - you (and your MOC) just might be featured as a Brickworld attendee and invited to speak about why you are attending the event! So, get that 5:30 AM wakeup call set up. This is an opportunity for that “15 seconds of fame” we all hope for in life.

It doesn’t matter if you are still working on the final details of your setup or if you are just there to show off a little. We hope you will take this opportunity to be proud of your creations and the event you help make.

It will be an early morning but a great way to show Chicagoland just what Brickworld is all about! We look forward to seeing you this week!

For any questions related to WGN and media, please contact Brittny Tucker using the cotact us link on the Brickworld website.

We will see you all in a few days.

Best Regards, Brittny and the Brickworld Team

We look forward to seeing you in Chicago when we light up the night with World of Lights!!!

Regards, the Brickworld Team

Brickworld will be held June 18 - 21, 2009 at the Westin North Shore Hotel in Wheeling, IL (a suburb of Chicago).

With only a couple days to go until the big event, please take note of the following information for setup and takedown:

Location: The Westin Chicago North Shore 601 N. Milwaukee Avenue Wheeling, Illinois 60090

Phone: 847-777-6500 Fax: 847-777-6510

Check-in: 3 PM Check-out: 12 PM Noon

Directions: If you require assistance with directions from the airport to the hotel, or driving directions from a specific location, please contact the hotel first, and if you need further help, please contact Kevin.

Package Shipment: If you have shipped or plan to ship packages directly to the hotel, there is a package handling fee for this service. Please contact the hotel directly prior to your stay in order to obtain exact pricing fees and related information.

Unload & Exhibit Setup
  • Unloading & setup begins promptly at 4pm on Thursday, June 19th for each of the three ballrooms (Ravinia, Lake Michigan, and Botanic). No one will be allowed into either room before that time. Please make an effort to have all your club members (if part of a club) arrive prior to 4pm if possible. If you arrive prior to 3pm, park in the North parking lot (to the left as you enter the Westin main entrance). If you will be arriving after 6pm, please see or call Kevin for unloading instructions.
  • Starting at 3:30pm, we will have a several volunteer staff members available to direct you to your proper unloading zone. If you are already parked at the hotel, please meet by the North loading dock. If you are arriving between 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm, as you pull into the hotel, you will see a staff member in a red brickworld polo who will direct you to the proper loading zone. They will ask for your name and/or club affiliation and direct you appropriately. Once at the loading zone, another staff member will provide you with your room setup location and instructions for unloading through the two approved Load Doors. Maps of the show floor will be provided for you with your setup space clearly marked on it. Extra copies will be available upon request.

  • If you require specific assistance to unload your vehicle, please let Kevin know at this time, so he can assign one of our volunteers to help.
During load-in, please remember the following guidelines:
  • Get your vehicle(s) into the proper queue. Queue order will generally be first-come-first-serve per vehicle. Your patience and understanding is appreciated and be aware that we are all working together to ensure that everyone unloads ASAP.

  • The roadway behind the hotel is small and traffic only flows one direction: north. Driving south behind the hotel will cause a traffic jam from the people coming the other direction. Please be aware of the signs noting such so that we can avoid bottlenecks.

  • Small boxes are the -only- items that may be brought in through the hotel lobby doors. When bringing in boxes by hand, the hotel has requested that we use the glass doors on the SOUTH side of the hotel only. Everything entering through these doors needs to be HAND-CARRIED. All large exhibits (modules, tables, large boxes, carts, etc) must load through through the approved Load Doors.

  • We have been told that a couple flatbeds will be provided by the hotel for load in. Please return these as quickly as possible so other groups may use them as well.

  • Once you pull up to your Load Door, unload your stuff through the service corridor into your room and place in your space. Your area will be marked on the show floor, and will correspond to the location marked on the provided map. Please do not set up right away, but continue to unload your vehicle and then move your vehicle back to the parking lot so that the next vehicle in line can start unloading.

  • We are asking that everyone please pitch in and help everyone else unload their stuff where possible before setting up. This will help us expedite unloading and allow everyone to setup faster.

  • The BW Registration desk will be open during the evening

  • Note that the Michigan, Botanic and Ravinia ballrooms will be closed and secure from Midnight until 6am daily so keep this in mind for setup.

  • Once your area is all setup, you may notice a set of stanchions allocated to your set of tables. We will be distributing stanchions to each of the general areas that require them. We ask that once your displays are all set up, that you distribute them evenly around the tables for your area. We will provide a map of the stanchion layout for each area as a reference. Once the stanchions have been distributed, a Brickworld staff member will be around to secure them. See Kevin Lauer with any questions regarding this.

Breakdown
  • Public Exhibition ends at 3 PM on Sunday. We ask that you please do not start to break down before this time. However, we also understand that some exhibitors may need to leave earlier than this, and for those people, we ask that you be discreet when doing so. NOTE: You will not be able to bring hand trucks or carts into the show during the hours of the public exhibition for safety reasons.

  • If you require specific assistance with the breakdown of your exhibit, please contact Kevin Lauer so that he can assign a volunteer to assist you.

  • Please pack up all boxes prior to bringing your vehicles to the Load Doors. You should be removing your boxes from the exhibition hall through the same corridors you brought your displays in from. If you unloaded by the North Load Zone, please load your vehicle from the same location. Same goes for the South Load Zone.

  • Once again, only small hand-carried packages may leave through the South GLASS doors. Hand carts, trucks, and flatbeds -cannot- go through these doors.

  • Once you have all the packages for a vehicle ready to be brought outside, please queue your car up to the loading dock. We will try to have volunteer staff on-hand to help you load your vehicle. Once your vehicle is packed, please promptly remove it from the queue so that others may load up their vehicles as well.

  • If you have the available time and energy to help out with loading up vehicles it is always appreciated. Please contact Kevin Lauer if you wish to volunteer your time.

Other Notes
  • If you did not request tables for your exhibit through the Brickworld website, please contact Kevin Lauer or Bryan Bonahoom upon arrival at the hotel in order to be assigned an exhibition area or to get on a waiting list. Currently all tables have been apportioned out to exhibitors, however, we foresee the possibility that some exhibitors planning to attend may not be able to make the show or those that do arrive will discover they have requested too much space. Obviously we want to give everyone a place to display everything, but please understand that unused display space will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis as it is acquired.

  • If you have set up your display and are not using the entire space assigned to you, please, please, please make sure to let Kevin or Bryan know so that we can look into re-assigning that space for other use. Thanks.

  • As always, if you have any questions not covered by this document, feel free to contact us for clarification or ask upon arrival at the event.
See you all there!

Regards,

Kevin Lauer Brickworld Logistics Coordinator

Brickworld will be held June 18 - 21, 2009 at the Westin North Shore Hotel in Wheeling, IL (a suburb of Chicago).

So are we nominating anyone to represent the LUGNET community or is the group on

LTC's nominate people?  Speaking of which...I'm hoping there is some discussion
on the community fragmentation at Brickworld.  If you get a chance to sit in on

The Brickworld Team is excited to announce a slight schedule change for Brickworld 2009. In place of the ‘Speed Build’ that was to be held on Friday night, we will be trying a new ‘Combo Build’ event. The event will run from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm.

30 Brickworld attendees will be selected to participate in this competition and will be asked to do an alternate model build. The trick? You have to build your alternate model from 3 LEGO kits. The best part...the contestants get to keep their kits at the end of the event!!! Many thanks to The LEGO Group for providing the kits for this competition. More details to be revealed at the event. This should be an exciting twist on the old ‘alternate model build’.

We look forward to seeing you in Chicago when we light up the night with World of Lights!!!

Regards, The Brickworld Team

On-line registration for Brickworld 2009 is now closed. We are thrilled to have 556 registered attendees coming to this year’s event. We think you will all make this the best Brickworld event yet!!!

If you still wish to be a part of Brickworld, you can register and pay at the event. But, you won’t receive an engraved badge or goodie bag.

We also closed down on-line purchase of event items. Again, you can purchase and pay for items at the event. So, you haven’t missed out.

Finally, we closed down on-line creation of MOC cards. We will be providing nearly 400 cards for various creations at the event. An MOC card is required for your creation if you want it to be judged for an award.

Good luck in your final preparations for the event!!!

We look forward to seeing you in Chicago when we light up the night with World of Lights!!!

Hi, everyone.

Well, I've been off the radar for a few years, finishing dissertation, teaching,
and now I'm moving to Eugene in August so I'll be part of the "Northwest" bunch
and not the "Northeast" so much.  I guess this means I can go annoy Frank Filz
more, which I am sure he's happy about, and that I'll be able to go to BrickCon
more easily than BrickFest (BrickWorld, etc).  In any case it'd be good to hear
from people in the Northwest in general and Oregon (or Eugene) in particular as
to what the community's like, who I should be in touch with, what kinds of
tomfoolery people get into, and where I can hide an eighteen-foot battleship.

Otherwise, life is spiffy.

The Brickworld Team is thoroughly overwhelmed right now. We have set a record attendance level and are fast approaching what seemed unattainable a few short weeks ago.

There are presently 427 registered attendees. We can only guarantee goody bags to 480 attendees. We will most certainly have some kind of goody bag for everyone, but we will not have enough of everything to populate an unlimited number of goody bags. Logistically, we simply can’t get more of everything in time for the event.

So, you didn’t stop reading this message? You are probably thinking that this wasn’t a very big announcement yet. So, read on.

We are overjoyed to be able to announce to everyone that we will be honored with the presence of Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen and Jorgen Vig Knudstorp at Brickworld. They will be arriving Friday (hopefully in time for opening ceremonies at 4 PM) and staying through Saturday or possibly Sunday.

We look forward to seeing you in Chicago when we light up the night with World of Lights!!!

For Brickworld 2009, we want to build on the collaborative display that was started last year, the LEGO Mansion. This year, let us try to build on the theme of lighting (in keeping with the World of Lights collaboration). An AC power drop will be provided if you wish to use a 9V transformer. Also, a battery box may be used. Either design the power supply into your room or try to provide sufficient wiring to reach the external power supply.

Please make sure to mark the Mansion Collaboration on your Brickwrold registration if you plan to contribute.

More details on the mansion collaboration can be found here. Any questions should be entered at the contact us form on the Brickworld web site.

We look forward to seeing you in Chicago when we light up the night with World of Lights!!!

The Brickworld Team has arranged to create and execute a Build On-The-Spot (BOTS) challenge at this year’s event. This challenge will be completed in addition to the regular Mindstorms displays and events.

As some may remember, in April 2005, TLG created and held an event in Billund. The event was attended by many who later became MUP, MDP and MCP members supporting the Mindstorms community. In Billund the teams were given a challenge at 3:30 PM Saturday afternoon and the contest began at noon on Sunday. We don’t want people going sleepless for the BOTS challenge at Brickworld and we don’t want it to interfere with the remainder of the event. So, the BOTS challenge will begin at 1 PM on Thursday afternoon. The contest will be held Thursday evening starting at 8 PM. (times are subject to adjustment)

The BOTS challenge requires that you and your team gain comprehension of the rules, construct a robot and program your robot in the 7 hours between 1 PM and 8 PM. The BOTS rules will be revealed at 1 PM. The rest is up to you.

To preregister and guarantee your team a spot in the challenge, you need to reply to this post. All competitors and teams will be public knowledge. And, speaking of teams; one rule TLG put in place that helped make the event fun was that there are 3 people required per team. We are holding on to that rule. So, sign up in groups of 3. And, all competitors must be fully registered Brickworld attendees.

As for the rest of the rules...well, your guess is, uh...your guess.

Many thanks to Brian Davis for volunteering to sit out the BOTS challenge and run it!!

We look forward to seeing you in Chicago!!!

Attention everyone!!

Okay - is everyone listening?

We are modifying the conditions of the BOTS challenge in response to feedback received from the community.

1) You do not need team mates. You can compete as an individual or a team.

2) You do not need to provide your own Mindstorms kit for the challenge. We would prefer that you do. But, many people will be using their NXT(s) to build robots for the other competitions before coming to Brickworld. And, we don’t want you to miss out on BOTs. So, we will have a number of NXT sets available for use in the BOTS challenge. If too many people want the kits, we will ask you to team up.

3) We will have a “stash” of parts beyond the NXT kit available. So, we will be limiting parts to an NXT kit plus parts from the stash we provide.

We hope you find these rules level the playing field for people flying to Brickworld.

The Brickworld Team is in full swing preparing for the event. We are thrilled to have 5 leaders lined up to head workshops on Thursday. The Thursday workshops are each 3 hours in length. There is a limit to the number of people in each workshop. So, there is a special registration required on your Brickworld registration page. The workshops will open for registration on May 1st.

The morning workshops run from 9 AM - noon. The afternoon workshops run from 1 PM - 4 PM.

We hope you have as tough a time choosing between workshops as we did!!!

Thanks to our workshop leaders.

This year’s workshops are:

Studs Out Mosaics with PicktoBrick

Afternoon workshop led by David Gregory

In this workshop you will learn how to use PicToBrick to create studs-out mosaics. David developed this class to help teach others about the great possibilities of the PicToBrick program, created by Tobias Reichling and Adrian Schütz. You’ll learn the features of the program from installation to building a color palette to mixing plates and bricks while building your mosaics. Join us as we explore the fun of turning a digital image into a two dimensional LEGO creation. The workshop includes a hands-on project to create a 30”X40” brick mosaic.

Art & Architecture

Morning workshop led by Arthur Gugick

In this workshop, you will learn about translating the architectural features of real world structures into works of LEGO art. Capturing the fine details is about knowing what LEGO elements work best. Arthur is a master in the scale recreation of architectural structures. Attend this workshop and learn some of the secrets of creating these artistic structures.

Introduction to LEGO Animation

Afternoon workshop led by David Pagano

Building for display isn’t quite the same as building for cinema. A brick filming primer, this workshop offers a look at the more animated side of the LEGO hobby. Come see a variety of innovative films; learn techniques for setup, construction, and animation with LEGO; and take part in a hands-on demonstration where you can try your hand at bringing minifigs to life.

MLCAD 101

Morning workshop led by Jeramy Spurgeon

Documenting our creations is the final step that we all wish we could do. MLCAD makes this possible. Participate in this workshop and learn how to start using MLCAD and learn how exciting it can be to see your creations take shape on the computer screen. Use this ability to share your creations with others. Remember, copying is the sincerest form of flattery.

LPUB 101

Afternoon workshop led by Kevin Clague

Once you have learned how to document your creation using MLCAD, the ability to print professional looking building instructions is just another step or two away. LPUB is a tool developed by Kevin Clague. It uses your MLCAD files to generate step-by-step instructions. This workshop will introduce you to the basics of LPUB and put you on the road to generating your own instructions for friends to build your creations.

We look forward to seeing you in Chicago when we light up the night with World of Lights!!!

The Brickworld Team is proud to announce the following Mindstorms competitions for this year’s event:

Stock Sumo – Are you a Mindstorms expert? It doesn’t matter for this competition. Come and see if you can build a robot that can push everyone else around. This competition will be held on Friday afternoon. There will be a limited number of NXT kits available for individuals/teams to build a robot with on Friday morning to compete. Steve Hassenplug and the whole Mindstorms Coordinator Team will be available to provide expert assistance as you prepare for the competition.

BOTS - In this super secret Build on the Spot challenge, you find out what your robot has to do on Thursday at 1 PM. The competition starts at 8 PM. Think fast. Build fast. Program fast. But, most of all, just have fun with this competition.

FLL Climate Connections – In this repeat of the 2008 FLL challenge, the kids’ teams will get a chance to exact revenge on coaches that are willing to risk it all to prove they are more prepared than their teams. Bring your robot and run against the clock to see who can score the most and finish the fastest. At the FLL World Festival last week, one team scored a perfect 400 points with 30 seconds to spare on the clock. This competition will be held Saturday.

Indy 5.00 – Racing is natural for all of us. Bring your best and race the oval of the Indy 5.00 track. Qualifying begins on Sunday morning.

Open Sumo – Do you think you have the biggest, meanest robot on the block? Come throw down with the other Mindstorms tough guys in open class sumo. The fight begins Sunday afternoon.

You can find all the rules for these competitions at www.brickworld.us under event info/competitions

We look forward to seeing you in Chicago when we light up the night with World of Lights!!!

This year Brickworld will host a new collaboration. The idea was unveiled during the closing ceremony at Brickwrold 2008. The idea is simple. Illuminate your display/MOC.

Use your imaginations. Use LEGO lighting systems, Lifelites kits, glow-in-the-dark bricks, black light effects using translucent colored bricks, Christmas lights, flashlights, glow sticks, etc to light your display. Of course, we must forbid the use of sparklers, candles, lighters, matches, fireworks, gun powder, flash paper, explosives, and chemical or nuclear reactions to achieve light. If you have a question about whether your lighting method will be allowable, please ask.

Who knows...there might even be an award or prize for the coolest illumination effect.

If your lighting needs to plug in to wall power, we will provide a power drop at the event. It would help to know this ahead of time if possible. You can let us know or ask questions through the contact us link on the Brickworld web site.

We look forward to seeing your creation in the dark in Chicago!!!

The Brickworld Team excited to announce the preliminary event schedule outline has been posted on the Brickworld web site at:

http://www.brickworld.us/_files/bn2009-event-schedule.pdf

You will notice that 3 of the 4 classes are set. As soon as the 4th class is confirmed, we will be announcing a schedule for opening registration for classes on the web site. Classes are only available to registered attendees. Last year, they were all standing room only.

Regarding the overall schedule, we are excited to be adding the World of Lights Collaborative display. We are also excited to be bringing back Movie Night.

The schedule is already busy, but we are continuing to work on adding additional fun items just for registered attendees.

This is all made possible by the kind and sharing nature of the whole community and our sponsors. Thanks to everyone!!

Stay tuned for more information. The event is still over 2 months away, but it is coming fast!!

Regards, the Brickworld Team

The Brickworld Team is very excited to be strengthening our ties to the Westin North Shore Hotel. The staff of the Westin has been invaluable to making Brickworld the success that it is by providing a wonderful venue with the best creature comforts in the event space and the hotel rooms.

Recently, in a small ceremony at the Westin, Adam Reed Tucker unveiled another of his architectural creations. A miniature of the Westin itself. The Westin staff gathered with Adam for the unveiling as seen in the picture below.

When asked about the miniature Westin, Adam said “it was actually quite a challenge for me. It was my first adventure with SNOT building, but that is what it took to make the model match the hotel.” The Westin staff has indicated that the model will be placed in a display case in the lobby, essentially making part of the Brickworld display.

We look forward to seeing you in Chicago!!!

The Brickworld Team is sad to report the passing of Esther Walner. Esther served as Brickworld’s newbie and FFOL coordinator. We send our deepest condolences to Esther’s family. Esther’s smile and enthusiasm will be missed at Brickworld and throughout the community.

In honor of Esther’s commitment to the community, we are proud to name the annual charity auction in her honor. It seems fitting to name the auction for Esther as it is all about giving back to children and the LEGO enthusiast community.

Henceforth, the auction will be known as the Esther Walner Memorial Charity Auction.

We will also be doing our best to continue Esther’s drive to increase female involvement in the community and make sure that newbies to Brickworld are treated with the same warm welcome that Esther provided.

Please join us in remembering Esther at the auction this year.

Warm Regards, The Brickworld Team

Now that I'm here, is there a tool available that would create a line curve from
spot x1,y1,z1 to x2,y2,z2?

Special for your question I think about Pathtruder. I never have used that for
now, but it sounds great what this tool can do.

I think Azerey wants a tool to create edge lines that could be used for
Pathtruder or similar. Up to now I have used inlined edge primitives, or strings
of lines hand created with MLCad, but indeed a better tool would be great. I
think LSynth (especially the unreleased new version) could be used for that, but
I'd like to get Kevin's opinion...

Maybe you are looking for a tool that can follow an curvature and make quads and

provided to us at: http://www.philohome.com/isecalc/isecalc.htm

Special for your question I think about Pathtruder. I never have used that for

If that is not what you are looking for, please give us more informations so we
can think about your problem together.

To define a curve you'd have to have at least three points in space and four is
more common. I'm not aware of any similar tools but I x-posted to .cad in case
I'm wrong.

The SteerCo is pleased to announce that the James Jessiman
Memorial Award (JJMA) for 2008 will be awarded to Philippe
(Philo) Hurbain.

As a prolific contributor to the LDraw Parts Library, Philo
has contributed not only numerous parts but has also given
his many software tools to aid in the creation of parts to
the LDraw community. His dedication to reviewing parts has
further facilitated the addition and improvement of many
other parts to the library. In particular it is fair to say
that, without Philo’s work, building modern Technic and
NXT models in LDraw would be a significantly poorer
experience. Overall Philo has, perhaps more than any other
single person, made the parts library which forms the
foundations of the LDraw experience into a better resource
through his invaluable contributions of parts, tools and
reviewing.

More information on the JJMA can be found at:

Maybe the time of year has something to do with it, but I must confess to have been moved by the generosity of a few talented builders lately. Seperately, we’ve seen Eric Sophie, Tim Gould and Mark Neumann sharing not only their MOCs, but also instructions to their MOCs with the community.

Over the years, we’ve seen all sorts of claims, conflict and general angst about intellectual property in MOCs, using other people’s ideas, failing to credit other people and so on, but in the last month we’ve had three people I regard as great builders openly sharing their work. Not selling it, not offering its use on some limited basis, not requiring credit: just sharing, and encouraging people to build.

So, kudos to Eric, Tim and Mark for their actions, and wishing everyone the best for the season.

Legomaster - Hudson Reporter Interview - Odd Occupations

Original un-edited interview:

Hello, please find my responses below:

In a message dated 10/20/2008 11:44:58 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, (xxxxx@.com) writes: Eric,

This is Ricardo Kaulessar from the Hudson Reporter. I need to interview for an article I am doing this week for my paper. My deadline is Wednesday afternoon. You can call me at #(xxxxxxx) or (xxxxxxx) Otherwise, if you can’t spend time for an interview, please answer the following questions:

Hello, always good to see you each year at my shows. I would be happy to explain more about what I do.

I create, photograph, exhibit and display “My Own” LEGO “Creations”. “MOCs” as we “AFOLs” or Adult Fans of LEGO call them. Because each hobby or genre has to have it’s own jargonese. I teach both professionally and privately, my team won Second Place at the 2007 Robo Rocks robotics competition. I display as many places as I can, so you might have even seen me or my robots around Jersey City.

I have made many creations since I was a child, even had a bit of a dark age. Which is the time ‘afols’ refer to as being when adolescents become young adults and moving on in to their teens, people tend to put their child hood LEGO away because they are growing up. Naturally, however, some people stay with the hobby and have indeed achieved some quite impressive builds. Jobs, and disposable income have created collectors who have huge numbers of parts. These afols, create clubs, displays and even huge Brick Conventions where LEGO fans gather to showcase their latest and greatest creations.

I myself enjoy building robot designs. I decided when I was 18 that I could make anything I wanted. That was 20 years ago. Wow, and I still live in Newport! So let’s see what kind of questions you have:

1 - Describe what is it like to work with LEGO bricks from your P.O.V?

LEGO is like using geometric shapes to create what is in your mind. The parts and shapes, present you with the ability to model out, proto type, and sculpt anything from basic ideas or forms to simple even complex mechanisms. Using a simple shape like the classic ubiquitous 2x4 Brick to the sophisticated RCX and NXT MINSTORMS computer-programmable Brick is intriguing. Combine these, plates, bricks, slopes, gears, axles, pins, bushings, even a mini fig LEGO person. That equals cool to me. It is just fun. I must say, though, that there is an inherent beauty in the parts themselves. Meaning, the shape of a pyramid or set of triangles forming a complex shape can mimic nature. For such an inorganic thing, a plastic brick, combined infinitely in geometric ways, to be able to mimic organic designs is amazing to me.

2 - How does family and friends view your LEGO Art currently, and were there any skeptics?

My family gets it. They know I am a bit of an engineer at heart. My brother is a skilled auto mechanic, so I guess it runs in the family. The part most of my family doesn’t get to see, because they have seen them at home for years, is the art shows, tent displays and exhibits I do; seeing how astounded people are when they encounter my creations. Except for my mother, she often helps me carry a box, or bring wine and cheese to an art opening. She’s always telling me: “My car is not a truck!” when I need a second vehicle to lug around tons of boxes filled with show bots. So, in some sense my family gets it but, “maybe not so much”.

I have had my skeptics. Still do, I think every one reaches a limit when exposed to what I do. Or when any one person is dedicated to a pursuit. It is that person’s strength and dedication to their Art that keeps them going. That is where others fall off, it is not their journey. Misunderstood artist? I just claim to enjoy building. My message has always been, see what LEGO can do!? My nic name “Legomaster” was given to me by my friends, and by people who have walked up to my displays throughout the years and said, wow! you ARE the LEGO master! So it kind of stuck. I know that some people have never been exposed to the possibility of LEGO being used to create three foot tall robots and animal mecha. So to them, I was the “Legomaster”. Sometimes, people would call me that or say it before we were introduced, so that’s how I was known. My name will always be Eric Sophie and the “Legomaster” to many.

I had some online tension when I got some gripes from other LEGO fans, mostly Teens, or tfols, if you will, about my nic name. That soon passed, then there were some difficulties working with other Fans on a collective project called the Mecha Hall of Fame. That spilled over to issues later on in the fan community. When I began taking a more serious direction with my art, some of the fans, who mostly were hobbyists, saw what I was doing as being over the top and encompassing self importance rather than sharing and intending to inspiring others. Besides, I think some of the people here in Jersey City know me better. Still it is better to learn from your mistakes and take it all in stride. Follow the rules! Don’t always make your own.

Nowadays, with all that behind me, it is odd to see that finding acceptance among your peers is not as important as enjoying what you find interesting, for your self first and foremost. Though I still maintain a semi active status online. I keep my gallery of creations updated on Brickshelf.com. user: Legomaster. I am also one of the curators for the lugnet.build.mecha newsgroup, on www.lugnet.com the Lego User Group Network. My web site is admittedly out of date, but it is not my primary web presence location; www.biomechanicalbricks.com.

I read some of your bio on your website but if you can fill in some of the gaps:

3 - When did you get your first LEGO, and do you remember your reaction?

I remember playing with them as a toddler, but they were basic bricks. I lost them all and only really remember my friends having them when I was maybe 5 or 6. When I was 8, I lived in San Francisco and my father took me to the MACYS at Union Square. That is when I got my first LEGO set. Now known as Classic Space, I was so excited, and rebuilt the little ship and space station a dozen times over. Moving around later on, LEGO and my brother went to each new place. We always had LEGO to play with.

4 - Where did you go to college?

In 1986 I got my GED when I was 16 years old from the then known Vocational Technical School on Montegomery Blvd. When I was 18 I was a supervisor in UPS at the Meadowlands facility in Secaucus, where I received management training. Thanks to a job fair I attended at Bhram Hall. I later became a Technician at T-Mobile. Everything I know I have taught myself, from computers, to Photoshop and graphic art to cross connecting T1’s and operating a fork lift. Growing up in Hudson County can be difficult. I have had lot’s of jobs. Some technical others where I could find work. Thankfully, I now use my ability and love of building, to teach High School Robotics, in addition to living as an artist and making things with my hands.

5 - What cities have you lived in and how long have you lived in Jersey City?

I lived in Queens, I lived in the bay area of San Francisco, I lived in Miami, I lived towns around New Jersey like, Bloomfield, Wayne, and Oakland. I have family in Pennsylvania. I went to Puerto Rico as a child. But I always come back to Jersey City. This is where my friends are, this is where the Art is for me, and since my days at Ferris High School, I have pretty much been here since the early 80’s.

6 - When did Lego become aware of your work?

The LEGO Company first contacted me in 1999. They wanted to include me in a news article for their web site about Artists using LEGO. I was one of four people as I recall that were featured. The LEGO company had taken notice of one of my larger robotic creations; a 6-foot long Praying Mantis, that took 3 years to build. They asked what I was making now, and at the time I was working on a large robotic armature. The robot’s head featured LEGO Cam Vision Command Sensor Cameras. This was one of the hot sets at the time, and one of my photographs had the camera in the eye of the robot, square in the center of the photograph. They loved it, they published it on their site and we have been friends ever since.

7 - Which of your LEGO artworks over the years are you most proud of?

Of all the creations and LEGO robots I have made over the years, although the most technically impressive ones stand out, I really must say the one I still like the best, and so does everyone who sees it, and I have brought it everywhere, is ‘Mr. Krinkle’. My mecha cat. It is yellow, it is sturdy, and it still blows me away that I made it in 3 days! It has a very cohesive and finished look. I once measured it’s body to check the proportions. The width is 16 by 32 inches long. Something about the proportions and the scale to which the robot is made, to me will always be one of, if not my most proudest of creations.

Simply because it was done in an almost carefree manner. Done in 3 days, rather than the weeks and month it usually takes to produce a robot where I have to carefully consider every manner of it’s construction.

8 - What project are you working on currently?

I am building a larger version of a robot I have called the Grelnix. It is blue and gray, with clear trans dark blue. It is coming along nicely and I have been working on it for more than 6 weeks. I have completed most of the body segments. I am currently making the ankles. Since this is a big robot, possibly pushing past 37 inches and up. The gearing in the legs and spine must be heavy duty. This gives me a chance to use lot’s of TECHNIC construction. I wanted to have it done in time for the Jersey City Artist Studio Tour, but alas, all things in good time. Look for the Bloobit mecha on Brickshelf.com.

9 - What LEGO-inspired artwork would you like to attempt?

I still want to make more robots. I have a few biguns in mind. I will be working on a large winged elongated hexapod design using black LEGO and robotic components. This will be a follow up to the Robo Quad, a 6 foot long robotic panther mecha I created in 2007. I am also planning a rebuild of the famous Jamocklaquat, a 4 foot tall fully robotic biped, see www.lego.com; “Artist builds comprehensive robot”, in to a more utility oriented robot I can use as a teaching tool.

10 - What other events will you be appearing at in the future?

I work with “This is it!” Productions in Hoboken. I display and provide hands on building activities in a traveling jubilee called the Kids Kingdom. All across New Jersey’s county parks during the summer months. There is always the Jersey City Artist Studio Tour each year. I showed this year at the Canco Lofts. I exhibit each year at the PNC Bank Arts Center during the Super Fantastic Kids Day Weekend, my largest showing each year. Currently, I have my work on display at Grove Pointe in the windows along Marin Blvd. Curated by Uta Brauser.

11 - Could you talk about your private classes you teach in robotics?

I teach both private Lego Classes and High School as a Robotics Instructor and Coach. When I teach privately, it is usually at my apartment, or at the customers home. The cost is $35/per hour. The general building class is for all ages. We do free building, or focus on a particular creation. The emphasis is always on what the student has in mind, not what “I” necessarily want to teach them. I look for their own talent and creativity. I then help them to understand what parts will help them build what they want to make. I also show them how to make sound structures and we talk about engineering principles. Kids are quite inquisitive on their own. In many ways I was just like the kids who take my classes. We both love LEGO. I just never had my own LEGO teacher!

Teaching LEGO Robotics privately requires the right candidate. I have taught home school kids that have serious focus. This is a very rewarding experience for a teacher. The kids are hungry for knowledge, they just lack the experience. It is a joy when you can really share what you know. High School Robotics is another challenge. Working with inner city kids in Brooklyn, who have never seen LEGO robotics in action cuts through the norm and really grabs their attention. In 2007, I worked with the St. Nick’s Community Achievement Program in Schools; CAPS. The school where I taught, identifies students at risk of failing or dropping out. The CAPS program gives these young adults a chance to earn credits towards subjects like Math by working in my Robotics Class. Teaching these students reminds me all to much of when I was their age, and when I got my GED. I now have the opportunity to help them by giving them something to be excited by or to inspire them by to strive towards their own goals.

That is what I have done. I have never met a kid who didn’t pause to think about that.

12 - What is satisfying about teaching robotics and LEGO-building?

To tell the truth, not dealing with regular co-workers and certain types of people, and only working with people that are genuinely interested in what I am teaching. That is satisfying. The kid who wants to make his Bat Man hideout and or Star Wars base better, the guy who wanted to know how to improve his model car chastise. Or the director of Storming Robots that calls me and says come build us a robot for our School. It is satisfying to be recognized for something that you are good at. As a “go-to” person for your specialty. When you are a pioneer, it is not easy to find a peer to share notes with. The students and people I work with honestly want to know more. That is a gold mine for me, but not only in the monetary sense, but in the reward in simply doing so for the sake of sharing knowledge.

13 - What do you like doing when you are not working with LEGO?

Not doing LEGO! What!? Do you mean like sleeping and eating? NEVER! Build till you drop!

I like supporting my friends Art, anywhere from seeing them perform poetry, music or attending a friends art showing. I enjoy working on Graphic Art, though the subject matter is my LEGO designs, I have really enjoyed using photoshop and getting better at using it to enhance my artistic presentation. Actually, when not working on LEGO I like to joke with my friends and impersonate the life around Jersey City. It is therapy for Hudson County life, try it.

14 - If you were LEGO product, what would you be?

Laughing If I were a LEGO product, I would be clear 2x4 brick, so you could always see what was in my heart. No, I would be one of those clear smoke colored wind screen canopies that came in the Bat Man sets, I think that LEGO part is sexy! Oooh-lala.

15 - Where can the public reach you with any questions about your work?

Thank you, for asking these questions and getting caught up on all things, Legomaster. You can reach me via email at mylegomaster@aol.com. To see some of my links and be my friend on MySpace.com/legomaster. For those of you interested in seeing my models and robotic designs, definitely visit my Brickshelf.com Gallery user: Legomaster. For attention regarding building classes and Art commissions contact via email. Check with me about LEGO PARTIES! Nadia, my assistant says we are booking up fast!

Yes, there are so many questions but you are a fascinating subject. Please get back to me as soon as possible.

My pleasure, pardon the Novel/book like length of my responses, I just have had a lot of adventures, and have been doing this for so long now. Feel free to edit. Also a note about the proper usage of the terms. The word LEGO is always in capitals, and never used with an “S”. LEGO is both plural and singular and should not be spelled “Legos” to preserve brand quality. Just an FYI.

Also, I am an independent Artist, I do not work for the LEGO company. I use the nic name Legomaster at the company’s discretion, they have an understanding with me, and I am careful to distinguish myself as an independent artist.

Thanks! Any questions call me right away! Also, I have pictures to go with all of the stories above, so anything you need an example photo of let me know right away! Or visit my brickshelf.com gallery user: Legomaster (login as Legomaster ->enter - no password) and choose something to represent my Art, or do you have a preference for an image? I could send one of my newest graphics as a link? Let me know, I would like to have one of my art works printed with the story. Yay! Thank you! Good luck!

Certainly a busy year! (Are there going to be any more events in the next two months?)

Ty ‘CM’ Richie, I have had a lot of fun this year. It has helped my focus and my attitude.
Something about all those smiling faces. As far as the next two months go..

I am in negotiation with some fellow artists about a few upcoming group shows.
My work will continue to be displayed at the Grove Pointe windows, where I just installed Mech Bay 13 and Bryce’s Big Blue Mecha.

Aside from that, I am just working Lego Parties and building creations for next year’s shows and events.

It’s good to see AFOLs out there at a variety of events.

One of my goals has always been to inspire others to get out and show their stuff!
Meeting many people along the way, we may just see some action from local New Jerseyans that I have met this year.

   Cheers

Best of luck in 2009.

Re, this set:

Hi Ms. Natenshon,

Following is the Bricklink (which is an online Lego sales site kind of like ebay) catalog Price Guide info on that set:

http://www.bricklink.com/catalogPriceGuide.asp?S=001-1

It shows the set sold for $38.00 within the last 6 months.

These are the currently available sets on Bricklink:

http://www.bricklink.com/search.asp?q=001

There are 2 currently for sale on that site and range in price from $30 to $69. The condition of the set your client has (including the box and the Lego itself) would come into play when trying to set an asking price for it. Other questions would include are all the Lego pieces there, has it been opened, etc.

Hope this helps and for future reference, the following newsgroups would be better to post in for these kind of questions:
http://news.lugnet.com/market/appraisal/ - for valuation questions
http://news.lugnet.com/market/buy-sell-trade/ - for sales offers

HTH and Good luck!

Fellow Lego Fans, I have been asked to let everyone know that I am going to head back down to the Loud Idiots
online radio show tonight @ 10pm EST for a full length interview.

I visited the talk show studios back in April 2008. Part of that interview has
been posted on Youtube.

I was also asked to prepare a list of topics/questions that I will be talking
about. I asked a couple of friends (AFoLs) to give me ideas as to what “they”
think would be good things to talk about, or more specifically what “they”
would like to hear me speak about.

I am including that list here now:

Suggestions for discussion topics - Legomaster Eric Sophie Interview:

Each topic Q&A - 2 - 5 min each.
Some history.
Some insight.
Some destiny.
  • Talk about how I got the nic name Legomaster-?
  • What I have been able to do with my Art, ie some of the shows I have done,
    adventures I have had-?
  • What I am trying to do with my Art?
  • How I began teaching-?

  • How the Internet has influenced my experience as a Lego/Brick Artist/LEGO Fan-?
  • What are other Lego Fans like?
  • What do they think of me?
  • What does the LEGO company itself think of me?
Additional suggestions made to me, were to talk about:
  • How I build and why the techniques are important-?
  • What how and why did I choose to make certain creations.
  • What I would like to build someday? Or what would be my master creation or ultimate work-?
  • Why use LEGO?
I feel these are good topics and are generally the most asked questions.

Feel free to toss other ideas or questions out during the interview.

Again, thank you and feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

Eric Sophie
Legomaster
Biomechanical Bricks

P.S. LEGO is both plural and singular and should not be spelled with an “s” as
in Legos, also, anytime the word is used, it should be all caps, “LEGO”.
Additionally, if at all possible, the title, “Independent Lego Artist” should
be used to identify me as NOT working for the LEGO Company.

This is standard protocol that I have upheld for years. This mutual respect
also keeps them from hassling me, because I make no false front that I work
for them. Just FYI and advertisement purposes.

end

In all honesty, I am a little nervous to share this information with the rest
of the Lego Fan community. However, it is also my sincerest hope to shed some
light on who I am and where my mind is at.

I apologize for keeping my distance from the forums and from AFoLs in general.
I have been trying to make good by my actions and through my dedication to
building in order to (hopefully) earn the respect I may have lost from many of
you because of past issues I have had with certain people.

For that I am sorry.

Perhaps tonight if you listen in, and or watch the video when and if it is
posted, I may just surprise you and or change your mind, if you haven’t
already met me in person.

As for those certain people, I will keep trying to learn my lesson and be a
better person because of the confrontations. These past issues have spawned
way to many negative circumstances, and I am afraid the general attitude has
affected some of the harmony we once enjoyed here on LUGNET.

I am a firm believer in “Things are what you make them”. We can work to
improve the harmony through kindness, creativity and sharing, here on LUGNET
and all across the Webbernet for all Lego Fans by working together.

Ha ha I said Webbernet.

If you have a chance to tune in, keep an ear out for the station phone number.
Last time I was at the radio show, we did not have time to give out the number
for call in questions.

I would be cool to hear from some of you, if you could call in while the show
is on.

Also, if you have a specific question for me, feel free to post it here and I
will check in before the show, then bring those questions with me to the show.

Keep positive, support each other and keep building....

Peace.

It's taking me a while longer than expected, mostly because I'm working on what
to highlight as there's so much that could be written about. I've picked a
couple points in the Cluetrain Manifesto not covered in the speech and writing a
piece based on those that I trust will do justice to fan/company interaction as

The SteerCo and Jessiman family are pleased to announce that the James Jessiman
Memorial Award (JJMA) for 2007 will be awarded to Kevin Clague.

Kevin has been an active contributor to the LDraw movement from 2002 with
contributions of software, authoring and the organisation of LDraw.org. As the
author of many software packages including LPub for instructions and LSynth for
flexible parts his contribution to LDraw as a viable CAD system has been
immense. As a co-author of the first book on LDraw "LEGO Software Power Tools"
he has helped many people get started with LDraw. Finally as a frequent member
of the LDraw Steering and Standards Commitees he has contributed strongly behind
the scenes. Overall Kevin has stood out as a great supporter of and contributor
too LDraw and has helped build on James' legacy.

Wow.  Great recap of how far LEGO has come.  Hopefully, they'll keep following
this road.

And I remember meeting Jake for the first time -- it was his first week at the
company, he was running the video camera during the "LEGO CAD summit". :)

Was that his first week at the company? I know it was his first year, but I
didn't know he was *that* new to TLC at the time. Somehow I don't think that's
quite right but I could be fuzzy.

I do remember the prototype Bionicles with the sticky tack used to hold the
masks on so they didn't need axles at tight tolerances.

Nice speech. I know of quite a few other companies that could stand to
learn this kind of stuff, especially the bits about talking more to the
users of your products (even when they aren't your direct customers).

Thanks for sharing! It serves as a reminder of what has happened, and what can
happen.

Looking forward to reading your thoughts on it in due course.

That was a great presentation.. although I would have preferred Jake mentioned
the 2005 NMRA layout was actually 3500 square feet (75x50) as opposed to 75
square feet.  I know Jake's a busy guy, and he probably sees dozens of numbers
per day, so I'll give Jake a pass on that.  But, the presentation has a lot of
great points that make watching it quite worthwhile.

Hey Maarten,

That is so cool! I really love seeing kids (especially girls) being encouraged to build intense models, (regardless of the motivating factors, smile) and I think 5 days is a pretty quick timeline for models of that size.

The models look great in your new bookcases, Im pretty jealous of all that glassed in, dust free display space.

Hi all,

After model 8880 I gave her set 8480 (I had to break down another creation to give her all the necessary parts for the one she asked for, set 8466 - maybe next holiday...). When she started building it, her oldest sister got a little jalous: she wanted to build a technic set, too. I only had one supermodel left: 8448. They both needed approximately 5 days to complete their model; quite long but they have other interests too (and they can’t stay focused an entire day on the same thing...). This time I only had to check on them once or twice. I only had the feeling that the oldest one only built the model to proove that she can do it, not because she’s as interested as her younger sister.

Both showing their models:

To show these models I bought a new cabinet. Actually we bought it to store our books (my wife loves to read, I stick to comics...), but I used a few shelves for lego-models.

Unfortunately book-shelves are only 28 cm (approx. 10”) deep, which is far from enough to get the 8480 in it. I had to build a special stand to keep the model under a certain angle. I needed the doors because I wanted to keep the models away from dust. As you can see, it fits perfectly.

Play well,
Maarten

Hi Tobias,

Wonderful website! The excellent pictures and text make your website a valuable source of information. You have inspired me to stop being lazy and finish the head on my horse sculpture. (Thanks again for the pictures!)

Very nice. I especially liked the descriptions of building cardboard LEGO sorting containers. That’s both a very flexible and very inexpensive solution to this problem!

Hi Tobias,

While I have enjoyed your brickshelf folder in the past, I really did enjoy my stay on your new site. For the record, I love your sculpture work, and your mosaic work is beautiful. I like the simple straight forward layout of your pages and the ease of following your work. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the replies.

Now, guess what... she’s been asking for set 8466 (extreme offroader). I’ll know what to do the next school holidays...

@Brian: indeed wonderful new technic sets this year (linear actuator!)

Wonderful to see.

You *do* realize your budget for Technic just went significantly higher, right?

Hi Maarten,

having a daughter at exactly the same age, I can only congratulate your daughter to have mastered this truly amazing set.

My kids’ technic affinity is somewhat limited, so I figure my son will be the first to actually ask - and he’s only six yet. Having build 8880 myself twice, I know how complex it is - not exactly something to be easily expected from an eight-year-old.

Thanks for sharing,

Jerry
