Here is the preliminary information on the 1st Quarter 2003 HRMUG building
contest.  Official Rules will be posted soon.

This will be a brick-sorting contest and will take place in three phases,
each building on the previous phase and increasing in complexity.  The
playing field will be square, approximately 4ft. X 4ft.  Vertically down the
center of the square will be a 2 inch wide grey strip, with the remainder of
the board painted white to one side of the grey and black on the other side.
The border of the playing area will be surrounded by a minimum 1 inch high
'wall'.

The contest will begin with 5 2X2 lego bricks and 5 2X4 lego bricks placed
randomly along the grey portion of the board.  Players will be assigned a
side (white or black) and placed at a random location and orientation on the
side of thier color.

Robots must fit inside a box 9 inches to a side.  They must use the RCX as a
controller and may not use more than one RCX.  A maximum of 3 motors, 1
light sensor, 2 touch sensors, and 2 rotation sensors may be used, but
non-lego multiplexing systems may not be employed for motors or sensors.
The use of lego pnuematics systems is acceptable.

The first month's competition (January) will be single-player only.  The
objective will be to get ALL 10 bricks (or as many as possible) completely
onto the player's side of the playing field.  Time limit wil be 3 minutes.
Scoring will be one point for each brick which is completely on the side of
the players designated color.

The second competition (February) is also single player.  This time the
objective is to get all the 2X2 bricks onto the player's side and all of the
2X4 bricks onto the opposite side.  Again the time limit is 3 minutes.
Scoring is +2 points for a 2X2 brick on the player's side, and -1 points for
a 2X4 brick on the player's side.  Again the time limit is 3 minutes.

The final competition (March) is player vs. player.  The objective is to
have as many 2X2 bricks on the player's designated side and as many 2X4
bricks on the opponenent's side as possible.  Bricks must be completely
within the player's color to count.  That is, bricks partially in the grey
area do not count toward score credits or debits.  The time limit will be
three minutes.  All contestants must wait 5 seconds from the contest start
before moving (to allow players to clear the field) and must automatically
shut down 180 seconds from contest start (leaving 175 seconds of actual play
time).  Scoring is more complicated in this round.  Players get +2 points
for every 2X2 brick on thier side and -1 point for every 2X4 brick on thier
side.  Also, players are penalized -2 points if they push or throw a brick
out of the playing area.  In addition, any brick (of either type) in the
player's possetion at the end of the round (after 3 minutes) generates a -2
penalty.  In possetion will be defined as underneath or held by the robot in
any way that the contest judge feels would have prevented the opponent from
interacting with the brick.

Hope this challenge is of interest!
