I've no doubt it is (1), even if to an outsider understanding most of the jokes
is a bit of problem (2). But why?
My theory is that it is because it is the only geographical area group that has
continued to use Lugnet for its forum. With the net allowing people to find that
thay are not the only AFOL in the world the AFOL society has moved from a global
one to more localised. This has brought more segregation, regional groups have
their own forums such as www.1000steine.de and www.brickish.org (to name just
two). and the friendly banter witnessed in .rtltoronto is moved out of the gaze
of the wider AFOL community. There are now as many active members (3) posting to
www.1000steine.de as there were worldwide in the days of rec.toys.lego. I know
that certainly most Brickish members do not post to Lugnet at all and not many
read it often. (I am by far the most frequent UK Lugnet poster with the
exception of Scott Arther, but I have never seen him post about Lego).
To my mind this is a bad thing, don't get me wrong, I appreciate the work Huw
has done to create the Brickish forum and many of the things discussed there
would have no relevance to the wider AFOL community BUT, at the same time, there
are many things that would be of interest, both from the Lego point of view and
from the community point of view.

OK, I've started rambling now so I'll stop. I would, however, be interested
interested to read what peaple think

Tim

(1) Some 'themes' groups are equally as friendly, but its about the subject,
e.g. ttrains rather than the friendship.
(2) Not really an issue to my mind, small groups of friends always have there
their 'in-jokes'
(3) Just a guess

Hello! Oh, and hello Toronto again! ;) The friendliest place on Lugnet is .lugnet/loc/Kalaallit-Nunaat/ (URL) I've never witnessed a flame war taking place there. No, seriously. I think it has much to do with people knowing each other in person. And (...) (19 years ago, 25-Jan-05, to lugnet.people)
