Lenny gave excellent suggestions on places to visit.
If you have transportation, such as a rental car, you should also visit George
Washingtons home, Mount Vernon, http://www.mountvernon.org, historic
Williamsburg, the colonial capitol of Virginia http://www.history.org and
Jamestown, the first permanent British settlement http://www.historyisfun.org
These sites are a good way to learn about early colonial and US history.

Washington DC is a beautiful part of the country. There are many other
beautiful parts of the country (remember - the USA is roughly the size of
Europe), but I'd recommend staying in DC. DC has tons upon tons of museums,
libraries, and monuments (such as the presidential memorials, Lincoln,
Washington, Jefferson, FDR - and the Smithsonian Museums) - almost all of them
are free to go into or are very cheap. They'll give you an excellent sense of
all of the good parts of America.
I don't know about hostels or cheap hotels however.

After attending BrickFest I intend to stay about two weeks in the US. I'm from
the Netherlands, don't know the Washington area and don't have any specific
plans yet.
My question is what location in the wider area around Washington you would
recommend to spend a vacation, preferably with some pleasant natural scenery,
and a hostel or budget hotel.
Or should I better fly from the area to a more attractive part of the States
alltogether?
Thanks,
Eric
