Evil MB!

Not like LEGO where the prices tend to get lower over time...

Sounds like an excuse to provide some statistics! yay!

For the new sets I purchased:

Year
   cpp (total)
   cpp (sets)

1997
   22.0
   23.1

1998
   16.9
   21.7

1999
   20.3
   70.45 (hopelessly distorted by a 15.99 baseplate!)

2000
   14.7
   18.7

2001
   10.5
30.5 (distorted by some 4.5V wires from S@H!)

2002
   14.5
   17.4

2003 ytd
   13.4
   17.0

The first cpp figure (total) is for the total amount spent on new cents, divided by the number of pieces. The second (sets) is for the average cpp for all sets purchased for the year (ie do the cpp calculation for each set, then average those cpp numbers).

There is a blip in 1999 (Star Wars sets, some at the original ott prices), and a dip in 2001 (blue tubs!), but the trend is for lower prices on a cpp base.

There are other explanations though. It could be I have become more astute (surely not!) at shopping, or more patient (could be...).

We do have the concrete example of the original SW set prices - they were reduced (remember those c.$90 X wings? or the $170 pod race sets?).

including charging $13+ for the Dragons impulse tins which are $10 everywhere else MB is sold.

Evil TRU too! (Except for the $99 BSBs, though).

Disclosure: I have claimed before that averages are not always great measures of populations. However, they do have their uses. You should make your own statistical comparisons before making purchasing decisions (except for $99 BSBs, they are a good buy). And steer clear of blue bricks too.

Since, as you know, 'up to 40% off' can mean amounts such as 35% off, 20% off, 3.089% off and 0% off, I decided to go to Highpoint to do some research today. These are the sets TRU had on sale and for how much: [LEGOSet 8012] Was: $51.98 Now: $29.98 (...) (21 years ago, 11-Sep-03, to lugnet.loc.au, FTX)

(...) Mmmmm. The fancy pants $5m sale involves a dozen or so sets, including the Red Baron and Pirate ship pricing previously discussed hereabouts. The only other mildly interesting elements were Tie Fighters for $18 and some of the small three fig (...) (21 years ago, 11-Sep-03, to lugnet.loc.au)
