CARLSBAD Legoland company officials said Thursday that they hope to make the
park a vacation destination in the future rather than the one-day trip it now
offers its customers.
Nick Varney, the chief executive officer of Merlin Entertainments Group, the
company that owns the park, unveiled immediate plans for expansion at the park
during a news conference in Carlsbad Thursday morning.
A new section called Pirate Shores spanning three acres within the park will
open this summer, he said. The pirate-themed addition will have four water
attractions, which officials said was lacking in the park.
The project will cost about $10 million, said John Jakobsen, Legoland's general
manager. It is the largest expansion to the park since it opened in 1999.
Legoland is 128 acres of interactive attractions for children between 2 and 12
years old.
Long-term plans intended to make the park more of a vacation spot include
hotels, restaurants and other amenities connected to the theme park.
"We are particularly focused on Legoland California as Merlin's first venture
into U.S.-based attractions due to the strong growth potential of the California
market," he said.
Legoland offers "hands-on learning where the child is the hero," Varney said.
The interaction "is what makes this unique."
Varney also said a search is under way for a location for a fifth Legoland, the
second in the United States.
Aside from Carlsbad's park, there are already Legoland parks in Denmark, where
Legos originated; Germany and the United Kingdom.
