Trans-Clear and Trans-Color LEGO Bricks...

LEGO transparent bricks have been produced by TLG since approximately circa
1951.
The first trans-clear bricks were slotted bricks with no LEGO on the logos, but
LEGO on the underside in block letters. This continued until 1956, when the
slotted bricks were discontinued (along with the windows/doors that used the
slots for holding them in place). In 1956 the hollow bottom bricks were
introduced (among clear colors they were still only produced in trans-clear)...
and used with the new (to 1956) classic LEGO windows/doors (from 1956-58 they
had solid studs, hollow studs thereafter). In January 1958 the LEGO patent for
the tube bottom bricks was introduced, and these hollow bottom bricks were
discontinued.
Here are the first trans-clear bricks of 1952-56 and 1956-58... (these are all
of Cellulose Acetate)...

Although Bayer was doing almost all of the plastic production for TLG until
2004, when Bayer split off its' plastics division as a separate company.
Eventually BASF started producing the ABS and Poly Carbonate plastics used for
LEGO production... and so it is today.
My updated DVD/download (free to current owners)... will contain many additional
images and information about the plastics for opaque as well as trans-colored
LEGO bricks and parts.
