Peeron and BrickLink say that the thin version comes from many sets like 6971-1 - Intergalactic Command Base (1984)

6891-1 - Gamma-V Laser Craft (1985)

6985-1 - Cosmic Fleet Voyager (1986)

6882-1 - Walking Astro Grappler (1985)

and some other..(http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/193a)

The thick version comes only from the 4010-1 - Police Rescue Boat (1987)

I suppose that the thik version should be more difficult to find (because it comes just from one set), but BrickLink’s price guide says the opposite. The thin version (the most common) is really expensive (about 2$) and the thik ones rather cheap... Besides this fact, I own both 6971 and 6985 (all original) and they don’t have any black helmet with thin chinstrap!!! All have the thick one! Now my question: is Peeron really right or, as I think, the “thin” and the “thick” were exchanged???

Luca,

There is more information to consider than just the dates included on Peeron. First, the dates on Peeron are the introduction dates of the sets. Many of the Classsic Space sets were released for years. So you can find variations in the parts used within those sets depending on when and where the set was originally purchased. Your numeric comparison of 4 to 1 sets does not consider that the 4 sets may have contained both types of parts.

Currently, Peeron lists the change around 1987. That would mean that any set released through that year might contain either of the helmets.

The CS sets with black helmets generally were the larger and more expensive sets. That would make them relatively rare. The thin chinstrap is easily broken; the thick ones last longer which contributes to the relative rarity of the black thin version. There is also the demand from the castle builders as mentioned elsewhere.

In short, current retail cost of a part does not necessarily reflect the vintage availability of that part.

(...) Thank you Clark for your very good explanation! You are very helpful! I can't say if my CS sets were bought during the 1987, later or earlier! And if I bought them later, it was anyway possible that those sets were produced during the earlier (...) (19 years ago, 15-May-05, to lugnet.general, FTX)
