OK, I’ve thought about this, and I’ve tried searching LUGNET, but I still don’t have an answer. I give up. The round 2x2 plate with a smoothly rounded bottom - why the heck is it called a “boat stud”?

I’ve always thought it was because that piece is found on the bottom of many boat models to make them slide across a floor.

That’s right. This part made it’s first appearance in 1991, under all ships found in the great Nautica line of sets

With friendly greetings, M. Moolhuysen.
