While I agree in a capitalist sense, I don’t agree in a realistic sense. Perhaps it might help if we weren’t talking about BrickFest/BrickWorld per se. Or, perhaps if we were talking about them 10 years in the future. I dunno. Anyway, here’s the scenarios as I see them:

Factors:

Money A) BrickWorld/Fest isn’t making enough money on its own to get by B) BrickWorld/Fest is making enough money to hold events consistantly C) BrickWorld/Fest is making a decent profit and is getting richer with every event

Proceeds 1) Money is being used ONLY for BrickWorld/Fest expenses 2) Profits are being given to organizers

So, here’s my take:

A1 - I’m VERY willing to just shell out, and I won’t even bother asking for compensation

A2 - I’m still very willing to shell out, and I probably won’t ask for compensation, but I might.

B1 - I’m still willing to donate money, and maybe I’ll ask for compensation, but maybe not.

B2 - I’m not really that willing to donate, I’d want compensation

C1 - I might be weilling to donate, but I’d *definitely* seek compensation

C2 - I wouldn’t be willing to donate, and would *require* compensation

Hence, my willingness to give my own money is affected by both factors.

Now, this wouldn’t be an issue if these events stayed at the level of BrickFest 2000 or 2001. Or even 2002. I don’t know, but BrickFest started at A), and moved into the B) category. And NOW, it’s probably at the B) or C) level. If I was reasonably sure that things were at A) or B), I’d likely just be fine with donating. But now there’s questions. What level is it at? And where’s the money going? It affects my desire to volunteer, like it or not, and others’ too.

As it happens, I’ve been very pleased with Joe being very up front about organization, and I’m quite psyched about the event and I’d even love to do another event like I did before (who knows if it’ll happen, but that’s another story).

BUT, if the attitude were to shift to “why should I tell you?”, I’d be very turned off to volunteering. And similarly if the attitude were just silence. I’d probably still go to the event, but I’d be more than hesitant to contribute. I’d see myself more as a customer than a participant.

(...) There is that--I mean, once being a member of Boy Scouts for many many years, I know that there was lots of coinage from my pocketbook that went to whatever event I was running/volunteered for and with nary a thought of reimburement.
