Again, these things require clarification. What doesnt require any
clarification is are the organizers making money?--thats nonoe of our
business. Our attendance should be based on whether we want to go or not
based on what we get out of it--not what the organizers get out of it.

While I agree in a capitalist sense, I dont agree in a realistic sense. Perhaps
it might help if we werent talking about BrickFest/BrickWorld per se. Or,
perhaps if we were talking about them 10 years in the future. I dunno. Anyway,
heres the scenarios as I see them:
Factors:
Money
A) BrickWorld/Fest isnt making enough money on its own to get by
B) BrickWorld/Fest is making enough money to hold events consistantly
C) BrickWorld/Fest is making a decent profit and is getting richer with every
event
Proceeds
1) Money is being used ONLY for BrickWorld/Fest expenses
2) Profits are being given to organizers
So, heres my take:
A1 - Im VERY willing to just shell out, and I wont even bother asking for
compensation
A2 - Im still very willing to shell out, and I probably wont ask for
compensation, but I might.
B1 - Im still willing to donate money, and maybe Ill ask for compensation, but
maybe not.
B2 - Im not really that willing to donate, Id want compensation
C1 - I might be weilling to donate, but Id *definitely* seek compensation
C2 - I wouldnt be willing to donate, and would *require* compensation
Hence, my willingness to give my own money is affected by both factors.
Now, this wouldnt be an issue if these events stayed at the level of BrickFest
2000 or 2001. Or even 2002. I dont know, but BrickFest started at A), and moved
into the B) category. And NOW, its probably at the B) or C) level. If I was
reasonably sure that things were at A) or B), Id likely just be fine with
donating. But now theres questions. What level is it at? And wheres the money
going? It affects my desire to volunteer, like it or not, and others too.
As it happens, Ive been very pleased with Joe being very up front about
organization, and Im quite psyched about the event and Id even love to do
another event like I did before (who knows if itll happen, but thats another
story).
BUT, if the attitude were to shift to why should I tell you?, Id be very
turned off to volunteering. And similarly if the attitude were just silence. Id
probably still go to the event, but Id be more than hesitant to contribute. Id
see myself more as a customer than a participant.

| (...) There is that--I mean, once being a member of Boy Scouts for many many years, I know that there was lots of coinage from my pocketbook that went to whatever event I was running/volunteered for and with nary a thought of reimburement.
