I know pirate gamers are going to want to participate in a bunch of the
other activities, so if the space at all allows, I'd love for us to have
the space all day Saturday, and once the final schedule of events is
posted, we will post the schedule of breaks in the Pirate Game. If it is
at all possible to have lockable space, I'd love to be able to set up
Friday night. I would also like to host a pirate "room party" after
Brickfest closes Friday night. This will be an opportunity for
interested folks to discuss the rules, perhaps build some ships or
islands, and just a general fun time. Of course this will be dependent
on having a roomie who is interested in this kind of activity (actually,
if there's a bunch of us, it might be nice to try and get a suite to
give us more room for the room party).

For the CAD fans out there, LDraw and related subjects can be added to the
list of activities at Brickfest.  I'll be planning an LDraw
meeting/discussion time along with a couple other CAD enthusiasts who will
be attending.

...This sounds cool :-) I also would like to see the pirate stuff set up in its
own spaces, lockable if at all possible...

...Possible ideas:

...Use the "back corner room", the one we set castle in last time (Castle was
moving to the room we had discussions in last time).

...I think Christina was thinking this would be a good talk/discussion room, but
the talks don't need to be in a lockable room, so maybe they can be held in the
cafeteria (which is ours this year, IIRC :-) We can use a corner of the
cafeteria for talks (like near the vending machines), so if its a big talk it
can spill out into the general cafeteria space.

...This way the room is lockable and not in a main walk area, but close enough
to "the action" that interested people can stick their heads in and interested
pirates can jump out as needed.

(moving into free association/babbling mode here)

...The only problem I see with this theory is that the room isn't all that big,
it could likely host a fleet about the size we had last year, but not any
bigger... (I could also be misremembring things... with no tables about, the
room may be plenty big)...

...So you may want to limit how many ships/teams are about (with an additional
option that maybe we can "charge" for the event (like $5) to limit wanderers
with proceeds going to a nice prize or trophy or something?).

...If there is any limit, maybe designate a ship/fleet to be "open" and
controlled by people just wandering in... to give them a feel for the game...
maybe even vote by bystanders :-)

...Another idea if we go with a "limit" situation, is maybe once the "big" game
starts going good and if you have lieutenants you can trust to run the main
game, you could break off and run a "micro game" in the discussion area... Like
4 ships and 1 island on a table (so _very_ small)... Play for an hour to
demonstrate the concepts and rules to people not in the main game...

That room is probably slightly small, but the only larger lockable room
is the one which had the trains and K-8 etc. last year (unless we also
have some lockable rooms we didn't have last year). It certainly would
have an advantage of not being a traffic lane. It would have a
disadvantage of not being quite as condusive to onlookers. It would have
an advantage for me and a few others of being next to the castle room
allowing a quick dash in to a CW event...

If I remember, there was a small corner between the two rooms which last
year had a display case. If that corner instead had a table, we could
keep the ships not immediately in use there, and thus not have any
tables in the pirate room.

I've offered to show off my mutilations, (err... modifications) with a
little seminar on the subject of doing so yourself, and the best tools to use.
Note: this is not for the faint of heart. People (AFOL's) thouroughly pure
and those with heart conditions should avoid this seminar at all costs!

Thanks for the vote of confidence! It should be a rippingly good time. (Pun
intended).
Seriously though, I know that the Brickfect committee doesn't want to have
seminars doubled up during the event, but I'd slice stuff up in the parking
lot if I had too.

Who's running the Large Sculptures and Mosaics workshop?  I'd be more than
happy to assist them with it, and bring some of my larger works, if that's
of interest.  (I suspect it's Eric H., if he's making the journey)
