A LEGO mosaic commemorating the wedding of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and Miss Mary Elizabeth Donaldson of Australia recently was constructed by the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area LEGO Users Group (WAMALUG).

Work on the mosaic began after a LEGO Company representative contacted WAMALUG to see if the group would be interested in building something for display at the Danish Embassy in Washington, D.C., and agreed to donate the material necessary to complete the project.

The mosaic is made up of nine 48x48-stud gray baseplates and 20,736 1x1 plates in five colors: black, white, and three shades of gray. Each one of the mosaic panels took between 3 and 4 hours to complete for a cumulative assembly time of about 30 hours. All 20,736 individual plates were placed with the word LEGO in the same orientation.

WAMALUG members who built the mosaic are Abe Friedman, Marian Hardy, Craig Hicks, Christina Hitchcock, Margaret Keys, and Rich Schamus.

Using software he designed, Steven Barile worked with Christina to convert an official photo of the Prince and Miss Donaldson into instructions to build the mosaic. WAMALUG would like to thank the LEGO Company for this opportunity and for providing the 20,745 elements necessary for the mosaic’s construction.

Pictures of the mosaic and the build team are on the Web at http://www.wamalug.org/event_20040514.html

The next WAMALUG meeting will be held from 12 noon until 6 p.m. Saturday, June 13 in Arlington, Virginia. For more information, send e-mail to info@wamalug.org
