Christian, please don't forget the intended purpose of the final version - to
help encourage new fans to come into the hobby. It was my call and my call alone
to NOT include the color change strips. I felt it was more "inside information"
than newbies would understand or appreciate. Again, the audience is people who
aren't already in the community. People who don't follow LUGNET discussion.
People who pick up the comic and find it so positive and upbeat that they say
"Hey, I want to be a part of that group!"
Once they're in the group, then there's a metric ton of discussion and attention
on the color change. They'll almost certainly be overwhelmed by that content
almost immediately. But encouraging new people doesn't happen by filling them in
on a negative issue of any sort.
Again, this was my call and my call alone. The reason the color strips were in
the original is because the original had a completely different purpose - to
help colleagues inside the company better understand the AFOLs. That included
the hugely important issue of the color change.
Call me a marketing lackey if you like, but there's not a big conspiracy at foot
here - I was/am simply trying to make the print version of the comic successful
in its purpose.
