Weekly lego castle set review

As a somewhat weekly feature for the castle sidebar, an attempt will be made to review a lego castle themed set, selected from brickset.

This week’s review is set 6086 Black Knight’s Castle.

An imposing, yet classy addition to the already heavily fortified black knight’s model assortment, the 6086 possesses a strong feel of militant regality, giving it a very accurate feel on the historical level.)

Situated on a less-than-forgiving 32x32 baseplate, the overall model seems to be supported by a wide array of 1x5 walls, fortified through the middle by some inverted supports with accents, and at their sides by a series of equally complimenting towers. With the emphasis between both appearance and structure, the designers gave the model a definite sense of harmony, which attributes some definition to the imposing and resilient nature of the model. With a assymetrical nature and the inclusion of various elements, such as survey towers, support archways, some barracks (tudor extension. perhaps), and the sloped roofing, I was very pleased to arrive at the conclusion that such a model hit the criteria for the aesthetic license nearly perfectly. (my only gripes were the empty sections on the back of the castle an the lack of a few accents towards the side of te entry gate.

Taking the selection of components into account, I was somewhat surprised to find a wide variety of useful structural and accentuating elements throughout the set, and what better than to find them in a significant quantity! A few of these notable elements, which I found to he of invaluable use included a fine selection of inverted slopes, turrets, decorative connecting walls and a selection of penants and heraldry. One minor disappointment, though, included my dismay to the lack of smaller and versatile plates. However, that minor concern was allayed with me awe over the defending force available and the widely ornate calvary, half of which consisted of full barding mares. Aside form those, small accents such as the dragon feathers affront the gates, a spirit, valuable tudor wall sections and a draconian banner atrbuted a nice feel to the model.

Examining the color scheme, I felt myself to be more at odds at this model, given that the model was designed in a similar aspet of earlier crsader type models, yet still possessed an effective sense of definition which is difficult to replicate with similar design aspects. Perhaps the designers in this case realized their earlier mistakes of using far too many dark tones, and redefined the model by taking an emphasis on the light grey hue and combining it with a series of convivial highlights, hence creating an ease of transition. In this aspect, color functions in perfect harmony with the complimenting design aspects of the model, giving it a sense of definition, which is important to convey its militarized nature.

Taking some of the functions into account with this model, I found myself to be more surprised at the lack of function in several key areas, however, was still somewhat satisfied. Some designs worth mentioning include the use of a winch system to hoist the drawbridge over the perimeter, reserved space for lifting the front gate, a small arms cache, and a release bridge to its rear for the deployment of soldiers. However, I would have preferred to see perhaps an included dungeon or a series of releasable ladders for accessability.

Again, the alternate building possabilities for this model are quite prolific, and so broad, it’s difficult not to tear the model apart for the sake of fulfilling one’s creative desires. Still, combining this model with its compliment, the Black Monarch’s Castle. would be quite sufficient for any building experience.

Upon finalization, I could only perceive a few problems with this model, although its highlights definitely outweighted any negating factors. All in all, the Black Knight’s Castle seems to be a resaonable and prudent investment for any collector, so I would extend my reccommendations there.

My suggestions? I would definitely extend my reccommendations on procuring this model...you’ll be surprised with the results.
