I was hoping we could break the ice. I was thinking we could all just post
a message to the newsgroup giving a little info about ourselves. It could
be as brief as you like, such as "Hi, I use a Mac and program" or something
more if you want.
This way, we would know that others are on the receiving end of the posts
(there is nothing as frustrating as posting messages and not getting
replies...).
I'll start.
I played with computers beginning in the days of Atari 400's and Commodore
64's. I learned BASIC, but never advanced to c. I quit seriously using
computers around the beginning of the demise of the Amiga (late 1980's?).
I have a music composition degree, however, beginning composers/musicians
aren't exactly well paid, so I don't do any music work anymore. I never
planned on it anyway. I really planned on going into computers.
I started using them again in 1995 when I went to college. I didn't have a
computer at home and used the school computers. I ended up learning Macs
mostly and a little Unix (enough to make webpages with telnet and pico).
Then I got jobs where I could move more and more into IT positions.
Now, I work with 5 other guys maintaining about 300 Macs and
promoting/assisting in the use of Macs on my campus (University of Utah) and
the rest of the world indirectly through several webpages. Recently, I have
been focusing on deploying Mac OS X in a lab environment (harder than you
would think).
Within the last year, I have finally been able to break back into
programming in my personal time. However, I don't have much real
experience. I have taken a c++ class, but have forgotten all of the
nit-picky rules. I have also learned Java, which I use now.
For more info, check out my homepage: http://www.cc.utah.edu/~jer29950/
My goals:
1). Make LEGO movies.
2). Make a utility that makes it easy for me to make LEGO movies. See
http://www.cc.utah.edu/~jer29950/lani/.
3). Get an Ldraw editor on the Mac (so that I don't have to ever launch
Virtual PC or that clunky slow PC sitting on my desk to edit a model).
I have accomplished goal #3 pretty much to my satisfaction. I can now use
ldglite in Mac OS X to edit my models. It is difficult to use and has some
bugs, but considering the crash rate I had with my PC, I am more than happy.
However, I can't convert the model files to POV-Ray format on the Mac yet.
But this task does not require much interaction from me to the computer, so
I don't mind using VPC or a real PC to do it (I already have an AppleScript
that automates VPC to do this... hehehe).
4). Get Mac development going.
I hope that this newsgroup and the new volunteers will lead to the
accomplishment of goal #4.

| Matt, thanks for posting that. I was too busy to get anything out earlier. In addition, I just wanted to add the following. Don has gotten ldglite to compile on Mac OS X and I tested it and it works. The steps to compile it are in Matt's email (the (...) (23 years ago, 9-Feb-02, to lugnet.cad.dev.mac)
