I think old Mac's (before MacOSX) use : as directory delimiter.

By the way, I like the idea of the two variables.  Were you thinking
of searching all subdirs in these directories, or just the subdirs
explicitly mentioned in the parts files like 48 and S?  Or were you
expecting the additional directories to contain the P, PARTS, and
MODELS directories, or some subset of them?

Only the specified directories. It's up to you to specify e.g.
LDRAWPOSTDIRS=C:\SomeDir\P|C:\SomeDir\PARTS
