I bought 6 big barrels with the ingenius idea of adding them onto a castle
for the boiling oil being poored on attackers trick.  I want to make it look
good and be able to actually poor slime or somthing out of it over walls.
So it has to tip over to go a little beyond wall.
First, cauldrons would be more accurate, but barrels should look pretty good.
Second, the oil would typically not be dumped over the wall.  I've seen two
approaches.  The first is to have an overhang above the gates.  This would be a
guard room above and forward of the gate.  The floor would have various
openings in it which could be used to drop rocks, hot oil,... They could also
be used by archers.

The second approach is like a drain from the catwalk.  The base of the wall
would have small drains leading to the outside of the wall.  Oil could be
poured through these and would splash down the side of the wall.  I've included
a little mock-up below.

The attached .dat file is a simple barrel tipping arrangement and the drain
mockup.

Cauldrons on the walls were used originally but as castles developed, the method mentioned was used. They were called murder holes or drop boxes and often emptied into cleared courtyards (killing field) where the enemy couldnt shield themselves from (...) (23 years ago, 12-Mar-01, to lugnet.castle)
