Jamie (my 12yo son) discovered an interesting shape, using plate hinges.  He
built an octagonal shape, by putting hinge plates <part: 4275> and <part:
4276> onto a z-bracket <part: 6087>.  He repeated this structure eight
times, and fit it all together into an octagonal shape.  In the attached DAT
file, I've replaced the bracket with plates and hinges, to make things a
little simpler.

He also spent two days looking for enough hinge plates.  But, that's a story
for lugnet.storage.

I was examining his construction, verifying whether everything fit exactly,
or if it was a "close enough" build, with the leeway in the fit of the
hinges allowing him to make it go.  Amazingly, it is an exact fit. :)

The triangle formed by the two hinge plates, with the hypotenuse being the
line between the two hinge-points, and the legs being the horizontal and
vertical components, has sides 48/20/52.

If you keep building, placing another hinge plate 48LDU up, and 20LDU out,
you can add another ring to your octagon.

Another implication: to make a fixed 45-degree angle in a construction, you
can use hinge plates to determine the angle.  Just keep spacing them
(vertically) by 48LDU (or 2 plates and a brick).

To reinforce the connection, you can use *lots* of hinge plates.

Steve
