Does anyone know the color distribution in the (4) prepackaged mosaic sets?

I'm getting antsy to build my custom mosaic, and since they do not appear to
be offering custom kits, I thought I'd try to see if the prepackaged sets
would suffice.  I tried to deduce it by looking at the sample images on the
Lego site, and counting them by hand, but the lower lefthand corner of each
one is obscured by an overlayed image.

#K34431 - Cat
#K34432 - Dino
#K34433 - Johnny Thunder
#K34434 - Tiger

The deed is done.  This is from the order confirmation and not out of the
box, as it were - I'll confirm when they arrive just to be anal.

K34431   LEGO Mosaic Cat
  2 - White
  4 - Light Gray
  3 - Medium Gray
  6 - Dark Gray
  8 - Black

K34432   LEGO Mosaic Dino
13 - White
  3 - Light Gray
  4 - Medium Gray
  4 - Dark Gray
  7 - Black

K34433   LEGO Mosaic Johnny Thunder
  8 - White
  5 - Light Gray
  4 - Medium Gray
  3 - Dark Gray
  3 - Black

K34434   LEGO Mosaic Tiger
  4 - White
  5 - Light Gray
  4 - Medium Gray
  5 - Dark Gray
  6 - Black

Tiger is the same as reported earlier but included here again just to be
comprehensive.  The bag count on the Dino is suspiciously high.  Even if you
only needed one piece from the last bag of each color, you still have more
than enough to cover a baseplate.  I'll definitely confirm that one when it
comes in.

Wow, John!  Now *that's* taking the initiative ;)

I suspect that the color bags do not all contain 90 bricks each then?  A
simple calculation of 90 bricks per bag * the number of bags per set yields
vastly differing amounts.  A minimum of 1936 1x1s are needed to fill the
44x44 interior space of a bordered 48x48 plate, right (44x44 = 1936).

According to my calculations below, these bags must contain differing
numbers of bricks per bag.  If we assume 90 bricks per bag :

K34431  Cat    : 21 bags = 1890 1x1s (Too few bricks?)
K34432  Dino   : 31 bags = 2790 1x1s (Overkill?)
K34433  Johnny : 23 bags = 2070 1x1s (Just about right)
K34334  Tiger  : 25 bags = 2250 1x1s (A bit too many)

John, I sure appreciate your validating the exact color-to-set breakdown.  I
would like to provide a set matching algorithm for my MosaicMapper app to
suggest the appropriate sets to buy to meet the color breakdown of the
user's custom mosaic.

I was under the impression that ALL bags do contain 90 bricks each. So if a
mosaic needs just one black, you end up with 89 extra.

This makes sense for the Build-Your-Own mosaic.

I wonder if this is also true for the prepackaged mosaic sets?

--SPECULATION ON--
With them, the color distribution is "fixed", like a regular lego set.  So,
for instance, if one of the prepackaged sets needed 200 white bricks, they
might ship 3 bags: 2 "regular" bags (containing 90 bricks), and 1 "custom"
bag(containing just 20 bricks).
--SPECULATION OFF-

I suppose we will have to wait and see, after John reports back in after his
laborious counting session. ;)

Bags from the custom kit are all 90 pcs - gotta figure these are the same.
Do your math again ;), Tiger is 24, Cat & Johnny 23.  I suspect the 13 white
bags (and/or maybe the 7 black) in the Dino is just wrong and will verify
that when it's in hand.

Anywhere from 23 to 26 bags should be normal.  A baseplate of all one color
would need 22 bags of 90 pcs (with 40-some left over.)  Adding even one
square of a second color would make it 23.  At the other extreme, all one
color but for one square in each in the other four colors would yield 26
bags - 1 bag in each of four colors (with 89 extra parts each color), still
needing 22 bags to cover the rest.  Small additions to the four colors
(without exceeding 90 each) could reduce the main color by one to three bags.

Now that I'm reminded that the order confirm actually lists all the mosaic
contents (baseplate, bag of slopes, and inst. as separate items too), anyone
could probably any time have ordered these selecting pay-over-the-phone,
gotten the confirm with the breakdown, and just not completed the order.
Hehe, live and learn.  Not like I don't need the parts anyway.  My last
mosaic left me with precisely 11 medium gray plates! (I hate how in these
mosiac kits they transform light gray into medium gray, and use light gray
for the new very light gray.  Consistency please!!)

Jake did seem to verify over on the FBTB boards that the custom kit removal
is temporary for technical/upgrade reasons of some sort.  Providing a
breakdown by these pre-made kits is, I think, still a great idea.  Three
times I've tried ordering mutiple copies of a custom kit by calling customer
service and it has only worked smoothly once.  Apparently changing the qty
for something that can normally only be ordered singly is not a straight
forward operation, even on their end.  The premade kits can be freely be
ordered in multiples without goofing around.

Doh! Once I run out of fingers and toes to count on, I'm hopeless.. ;)
Thanks for the correction.

LOL!

S@H package with all four mosaic kits came today and the color distributions
I listed earlier are verified:
http://news.lugnet.com/build/sculpture/?n=374

I had to satisfy my curiosity about the extra Dino bags so I did a quick
part count from the instructions.  The surplus bags appear to be 2 Black,
and 1 each White, Very Light Gray, Light Gray, and Dark Gray.  If it's a
mistake it is a consistent one as I ordered (and cancelled) another with the
same 31 bag results in the email confirmation.  Maybe they just decided to
be generous with that kit...?

happy mosaic-ing,
John
