A local museum has asked me and my students to create a giant mosaic for them to
be displayed. I've already created it digitally:

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=74438

(There will be dozens of mini-mosaics with a Las Vegas theme all around this
giant mosaic.)

The mosaic is about 8' long and 6' high. It will be STUDS OUT. I'm using mainly
plates. I'm planning on starting with gray baseplates, then covering them with
black plates, then building the mosaic on THAT.

I've never made a mosaic this big and I'm having trouble deciding on how to
create it exactly. I don't want to just hang it. I want it built to last for
years. I was thinking of buying a wood panel and securing the grey baseplates to
that with countersunk screws. Then I'd have an 8 by 6 canvas to work with. The
problem is that there doesn't seem to be 8x6 panels available. All stores I've
check (like Home Depot) only cary 8x4. It seems to be the standard. Changing the
size of the mosaic is not an option. So it seems like I've got to do it in two
pieces (would hate that) or make an 8x6 panel somehow.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,
Corey

(...) Building an 8x6 panel would take a very simple amount of carpentry skills. 2 pieces of plywood and a border around it made from 1x2's or 1x4's would probably be nice and stable. A little cross bracing in the back for reinforcement and you're (...) (20 years ago, 16-Apr-04, to lugnet.build.mosaic)

(...) If you are really set on a single backboard, I would buy 4 thin sheets of 4 X 8 plywood. Lay 2 pieces side by side to form a 8 X 8 square. Lay the other 2 pieces on top, perpendicular to the first 2, and screw them together. Cut the joined (...) (20 years ago, 16-Apr-04, to lugnet.build.mosaic)
