I just found the coolest minifig builder link today. It's a flash program that
let's you customize a minifig character to look like you (or whoever you'd
like). You can change everything from skin tone to facial hair to handheld
objects. Lots of the options are things not found in the real minifig LEGO
world.

I have no idea who the creator(s) of this flash are, but they did quite a good
job. Also you can save the flash file as M0IUSBDT.SWF (it's 372 KB) so that
you can play with it while you're offline.
