You should check out some of the other Gundam mecha. It's true that many of
them are heavily ornamental, but if you scour through some of the 20-odd
different series, you can find more "military" looking mecha.
Some of my favorites:
Zeta Gundam - has more of a "Macross" feel
http://www.hlj.com/cgi-local/hljpage.cgi?BAN52673
Super Gundam - Really just a RX-78-2 with a big carrier fighter on its back,
but still cool.

Gundam Leopard D - This is one of the more military-looking... a real waking
arsenal
http://www.hlj.com/cgi-local/hljpage.cgi?BAN55162
Leo Custom - a very simple, but practical-looking model
http://www.hlj.com/cgi-local/hljpage.cgi?BAN55152
Heavy Arms Custom - MMMMmmmm.. micro-missiles.
http://www.hlj.com/cgi-local/hljpage.cgi?BAN59767
Serpent Custom - This is the most Military-looking of all. Love that bazooka!

0Z-07 Aries - Really cool flight mode... I like this a lot... would
translate well into LEGO
http://www.hlj.com/cgi-local/hljpage.cgi?BCL1851
Gundam Double X - I like this one because of all the heat-sink foils that
open up when you put it in satellite-cannon mode.
http://www.hlj.com/cgi-local/hljpage.cgi?BAN55012
G-Falcon Unit Double X - This one is my personal favorite. I got this model
for X-mas :^) Has a great dropship-fighter attached to its back, as well as the
awesome twin satellite cannon. The Gundam can swing its legs backwards into
the fighter for flight mode.

Hmm, I better stop now, before the list gets too long. (actually I think it
might be already ;^) ) There are a few others that look good without
getting too
flowery, but I'll leave it up to you guys to investigate that. :^) HLJ is a
good place to look anyway because they have such nice pictures.
Even if you're not a Gundam fan, they have some excellent ideas for weapons
and accessories like flightpacks or carrier-fighters.

Yep. I highly recommend everyone check out Macross Plus. Excellent
animation, excellent story, excellent mecha... and you don't have to know
anything about
Macross to watch it, because it has a self-contained story. Toycom is
releasing transforming toys of the mecha very soon... hooray!

| Say, is there a good guide around anywhere to mech terminology, especially weapon types? One of the notations I've seen a lot of, for instance, is "SRM##", where the ##'s seem to be the count of rockets (i.e., SRM8 or SRM20). At this point, I can (...) Robotech, man! :-, Then Go-Bots and Transformers (blech now), and Battletech later, though since early Battletech stole mucho from Robotech (which in turn stole mucho from Macross and Mospeda) I feel I can't really count that.
