Well here’s my first prototype:

Even though the inspiration image is only white because it’s a sketch on a white background, it kind of put me in mind of a gleaming white mecha so I’ve utilised all my new Exo-Force parts. I imagine it as a brand new military prototype, fresh from the labs, ready for testing. Heh heh.

Compared to Klaupacius’ effort (which I think is awesome) I’m certainly no Trurl, but since this is my first ever mecha I’m pretty pleased with the design so far.

hehe... I took apart my white exoforce model too - I only had enough parts to cover one leg, looks like you had the same problem!

I like your design. But then it does look fairly like what I’m doing ;)

Chapter II: The Mysterious Disease - Bluefootitus

Thanks for your encouraging words Mo. As it is, I think I can scrape together just enough white pieces from my other sets except for one of the feet. Consequently today’s prototype is suffering from a rather embarrassing blue stand-in piece:

I’ve gone through a substantial re-design, mainly because I wasn’t happy with the direction the leg joints bent. This version has proper equi-distant leg spacing and allows the top joint to bend straight down. This is important ‘cos this mecha has one or two tricks up it’s sleeve that will stay secret until my final design is unveiled. Heh heh.

Stay tuned for the next episode: Revenge of the Super Surprising Higher Construction Brain Lego Function Component of Doom! See ya’ll then.

Cheers, Paul.

Episode III: Attack of the Decidedly Ironic Super Surprising Higher Construction Lego Brain Winter Wheel Function Component... of Doom!

(The episode title has changed? So I’m a revisionist like Lucas. Deal.)

The big surprise component is... A Robo-pod lid. Betcha didn’t see that coming. Heh heh.

A note on the ankles. I was wanting to use four of these: http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/48171 (Thanks for the link Rosco) but it’s not in any of the Exo-Force sets and I can’t afford to get hold of them just for this contest. As a result, the solution I’ve had to adopt means that my ankles can rotate in 3 planes instead of just two and allows for the pose seen above. We’ll just have to see if this increased flexibility pays off.

Next episode: Oh no! Copying other students’ work is not allowed!

Cheers, Paul.

Part 4: Oh no! Copying other students’ work is not allowed!

Well, we’re getting close to the final design. I was pretty sure that the Exo-Force joints were going to be the right choice as I had always planned on an ultra-lightweight body:

Also I have to admit that the body is inspired by Klaupacias’ design. I was really struggling with ideas for the cockpit and then I saw Klaupacias work I couldn’t think how else to do it, plus I happen to know I have the required parts in white! The odd colours are due to tempory stand-in parts I’m using till I can find the right ones.

I’m really pleased I’ve now managed to incorporate the bottom of the Robo-pod container as well as the lid, which gives the hips a pleasing pod-like look and provides some heavy armour underneath. The leg details have been changing with every revision to the extent that I’ve almost completely done away with the red now.

The final push to completion might take a while as the I know I have the parts but they’re buried under a several tons of boxes and paperwork in the back room.

Next Episode: Piles can be Hazardous! Take Extreme Careful Anti-Collapsing Precautions!

Cheers, Paul.
