Ladies and Gents,

Regarding recent events, and general interest abound, I am announcing a contest that shall begin Jan 1, 2006.
IRON MECHA

This is a contest of building talent and fun. I do not have all the details worked out yet, but it is my desire to create a contest where anyone can play.

The winner will win bragging rights.

The build will be simple enough. I shall pick a graphic of a mecha. The builder will build a mecha based off of that graphic. Artistic license is encouraged. You may build macro, micro or anything in between. The Build does not need to be an exact copy of the graphic but we should be able to see how you got from the inspirational image to your build. The graphic will not be revealed until the beginning of the competition.

Judging will be by an independent panel, not unlike Iron Chef. (I already have one judge confirmed and I will pick others. They will remain anonymous until judging begins. No I won’t tell you who) I am simply your host for the IRON MECHA competition.

This contest will be a free for all open to anyone. Based on the success (or failure) of this contest, I will evolve it into something more grandiose, like a tree elimination format with a grand championship. But let’s just have fun with this first shall we?

So, the first step is to sign up for the contest. Reply to this post with your intent to participate. You Must announce your intent to participate by midnight Dec 31, 2005. The graphic will be revealed in a new post Jan 1, 2006, and your entry will be judged on Feb 1, 2006.

As with Iron Chef, progress shots are encouraged, but not mandatory. I’m shooting for cooperative competition in this IRON MECHA. If a builder is having trouble achieving a particular aspect of the build, it is my desire that they feel comfortable seeking help, even from fellow competitor. If you’re particularly crafty, you could show fake progress shots. Entirely up to you.

Again, I would like to stress that this contest is for anyone and is based on the idea of fun. If you’re not a self proclaimed mecha builder but want to play, BY ALL MEANS, do so. Our judges will be looking over criteria and may or may not be Mecha experts. Anyone can win! Come be a part of IRON MECHA.

(not affiliated with any other private mecha build contests that may or may not be in progress)

Your IRON MECHA host,
Mark Neumann

This is crazy enough to work. Your recruitment strategy for mecha building is going well, I’m in and I’ll lose but hey, nothing like a challenge to motivate building.

Okay, I have no idea if I can do this, but what the hey - I am in.

If your son is into it enough, you may end up competing with him. I
get the feeling unless he is very, very young, that age may have
little to do with the outcome.

Interesting, but in Iron Chef you are given a main ingredient that you must use to make a dish of your own choosing. That would be more akin to specifying a Lego part that must be used prominently, then the rest of the design is up to the chef/builder’s creativity.

Can you build a tasty mecha whose primary ingredient is tofu? That is your challenge. :-)

I really like this idea.  I mean I REALLY like this idea.  Some suggestions for
parts:

-Brown Star Wars Ep. I droid fighter wings
-Insectoid legs
-BURPs
-Any Duplo part
-Exploriens cockpits

Basically, any part that I normally shun would be a cool challenge.  As a matter
of fact, I think I'm going to go try to build some mecha with these parts
anyway.
*dig dig rattle*
(actually, I already built something with the droid fighter bits a few years
ago, but never posted the pics.)

Colin

Bryce would totally win that challenge.  All of his mecha are built out of
reject parts.  I mean, really - ninja wings?!?

Yeah, that is typical in Iron Chef.

For this pilot contest, if you will, we are using a graphic to take the place as
the ingredient.  Depending on how this contest goes, and if the interest remains
I was thinking of setting up an elimination schedule and using seed parts as the
ingredient.  So if this continues, we'd get a roster of participants, they'd be
paired up, each pair would get a part and a month.  Then next month, new pairs
and a new part.  So on and so forth down to a grand champion.  But I thought
that'd be a bit much to start with so I decided to go with this.  But gauging on
the popularity of this, I better start hunting for a black suit and a silver
platter.

Gosh, I’ve never even built a mecha before. Actually, that’s not true - last night, I was watching “Samurai Jack” and I got real impressed by robots, and wanted to make one. So I did - it sucked. The head was too big for the body. But I’ll try again.

Sounds good. Count me in.

I shall pick a graphic of a mecha.

Can you provide at least 2 graphics, i.e. front and back?

This would be preferable for everyone, I am sure. More pictures and more detail equals a much better version of the model.

Please toss us as many pics as you are able, Mark.

I am throwing this quick post in.

I was contacted by another of our magnificent builders, Tuomas "TheQ" Kukkamaa.
He wishes to join in the fun and is having difficulties with Lugnet.  Will the
other competitors tremble in fear or will they stand up to the mighty Q?  Only
time will tell.

I really, really need a black outfit and a platter to serve this up on.  ;)

Might be fun, I’m down with it.

A little nervous about the deadline, though. Oh well, maybe I’ll build it microfig scale :)

Hi Mark,

I would like to try too! I’m in - but with half the time!! I’m posting this in a 24 hour layover between a 1 week Xmas holiday and a 2 week New Year holiday... (I’m having a great holiday season!) I won’t be back until 13th Jan... I’ll be suffering from a 10 hour jet lag... I won’t even see the image until then... and I’ve never built a real mech (just a couple of space-ships on legs...)! Cool, a great way to start the year!

Cheers, Mark Stafford (Nabii)

Mark,

While I am far from being a mecha construction master (I have not built a real mech MOC in my AFOL career), I have always wanted to. So what the heck, please add me in.

Thanks for organizing this,

Jude

Sign me up baby, sign me up. And where is your black suit? Although the names on this list are impressive, there are a couple of builders missing: Award winning mecha designer Fradel “Where’s my pants” Gonzales, and his sitcom partner Dan “I’ll sue you until you bleed” Rubin. I interpret their refusal to participate as an admission of cowardice, impotence and possible affiliation with the communist party.

“Sitcom partner!” That is slander! I will sue your ass!

I wasn’t going to enter this because of time constraints, and a copyright office due date on Feb 1, but now that the gauntlet has been thrown, I have no choice. I’m in.

I’ve never built a mecha before, unless you count my Dragon-bot which is more Mindstorms I guess: http://members.lycos.co.uk/legoville/lego/lego04/dragon01.html

I’d love to enter this contest though. I’ve been looking a challenge to get me motivated to try my hand at Mecha and this might just fit the bill. :)

Cheers, Paul.

Mark,

It is 11 minutes past 2 on the east coast but still only 11:11 on the west coast, so technically not yet the 31st. ::wink:: Anywho, I just wanted to say “please add me” to the list. I have not created any true mecha of my own yet, but i think witnessing eric’s varied assortment first-hand provides for enough observation-based learning; that or at least some form of osmosis.

I be the fool.
I just saw on another post that the “participation notification” had to be submitted by midnight of today, not by today. I misunderstood the before/by part. Anywho, just thought to point out my silliness.

I just got back from a month in Russia today and saw this, and so it seems fated that I should enter (even though I’ve never tried to build mecha before, so the only person I know I’ll out-build is Goldman).
