What was will be again. The RG Mech ver 2.0
Some years ago when I joined LUGNET, my first publicly posted MOC, created as a
Member was the
RG Mech. At the time I
was building a large model that was going to take years to complete. So I made
the RG Mech as a fun way to start making friends and begin to interact with the
online Lego Fan Community.
After 4 or 5 years, the RG Mech has become so beat up. Taking it all over the
USA to shows and exhibits everywhere I could. Now it was time to breathe new
life in to this old design, as it had seen its last days.
I present the RG Mech
2.0
The RG Mecha features an Elongated Hexapod Design
I owed it to a colegue to add thumbs. The trans green eye parts were a gift from
Felix Greco. Thanks Felix!
The new version makes use of a Technic Turntable in the waist at the base of the
pivoted spine.
The Shoulders feature some 1x4 hinges to actuate the side splay.
Two insectoids pilots. One in the head unit and one in the chest.
The wings of the RG Mech are powered by a Record and Play unit.
It was a goal to include this feature. The two motors of the unit are linked by
a set of gears and axles. Then the gears drive a cam on either side of the unit.
These cams provide the lift/flap motion.
I worked on this design on and off for about 2 or 3 weeks. It was fun. I was
glad to fill back in the gap left by the original. It was more an excersize in
design than a purposeful execution of new ideas. Though there are some
inovations.
The goals I had were simple:
- Re-create the old RG Mech
- Use Trans Green Elements in the eyes.
- Thumbs
- Powered Wings using the Record and Play unit.
- just have fun
yay! What was will be again.
RG Mech 2.0

| Amazing as usual E...it looks like something Godzilla might take offense to, something from Monster Island. The fact that the wings move is too cool, hope I can see that in person some time. The legs...the wings..the evil eyes (provided by Greco's (...) (20 years ago, 27-Sep-04, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

| Eric love this design! The insect theme comes through strong with the six legs, compound looking green eyes, and wings to boot. The head as usual is epic with the twin proboscii mouthparts reminding me of a moth's feeding apparatus. Ryan (20 years ago, 28-Sep-04, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

The leg placement is compact and efficient looking but by far, my favourite part are his hands (...) (20 years ago, 28-Sep-04, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

I've always liked red and dark gray together, and you finally found a good use for those trans green quarter domes from the Space Police II theme, not to mention those darn leg parts from the Insectoids theme, plus all (...) | Hi Eric. What exactly is a record and play unit? The name sounds like a camera but i guess its some kind of motor? BTW, if cherubs had a demon counterpart, this would be it. F (20 years ago, 11-Oct-04, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)
