I said it before (in another venue) Cool Car, Bram!
This gives me an excuse to get used to Free Agent for newsgroup
posting as well. :-)

Reading the same post in RTL, L-CAD listserv and Lugnet isinteresting,
and the car is gorgeous!

LDAO to create instructions for it. They should be up on

I used it - it ate itself. More accurately, I got a lot of bitmaps
and some HTML, but no usable output. I suppose I should run it again
and get a better description of the problems. You can see my version
of the instructions on my web page. But I think I'm going off paper
now (even virtual paper) in favour of animated instructions a la
the CD based models from TLG. Only my animations are in LDraw
not QuickTime because the file format is more compact.

| You to convert those BMPs to GIFs to make the HTML usable, as LDAO and
LDraw do not output GIFs, but you really need GIFs or JPGs to be
Web-centric. Just run them through a converter in the directory you dumped
them to, then open the instructions/partslist pages in a browser, they
should turn out fine (though I don't like the default fonts used, and trash
that formattting right away).

That I can do[1], but I had sort of hoped that the "generate HTML" option would be
automatic.

"Generate HTML" will do the bmp-to-gif conversion, if you install
ImageMagick and tell LDAO where it is.

| Forgot a couple of URLs:
To get ImageMagick, try
<ftp://ftp.wizards.dupont.com/pub/ImageMagick/> The Win95 and NT
binaries are both under the NT subdirectory.
For more info on using ImageMagick with LDAO, read through

And if ImageMagick will run, and likes your system (or something).
I used PaintShopPro instead, which does batch conversion. Same effect,
but this version worked OOB for me.

Yeah, I have yet to figure out what the heck I'm supposed to do with
ImageMagic. I ftp'ed it down and unzipped it. Couldn't find an
"install program" of any kind (setup.* install.*, nothing), mainly
just a lot of other .exe files and some random junk that I assume are
for those with C++ compilers.
Told LDAO where I unzipped IM, get some kind of KPLogic error (will
post the exact error when I get to work).
I was afraid it was my fault for downloading the smaller of the two
files in the directory the link goes to, but I downloaded the 11 meg
file last night and see virtually no differences aside from a bunch of
included images and a make.com, which doesn't seem to do me any good.
I was pretty hyped yesterday. Grabbed all the LDraw files and
updates, LDlite, LDAO, L3P, Pov-Ray. Got almost everything working,
even added the L3P buttons to LDAO via the ldraw.ini file. Rendered
several files at 1024x768 AA (not too slow on my 400). Then decided
to dl ImageMagick to try to make instructions as a test and WHAM!
brick wall. :(
Oh well, it'll be a bit before I need to make instructions for MOC's
anyway, so I'm sure I'll figure it out. LDlite is sure making me long
for a Windows LEdit, though. :)

As long as you've got the convert.exe program somewhere, you should
have ImageMagick as setup as LDAO needs it.

I really wish I could duplicate this! I've had plenty of reports of
it, but I just can't make it happen on my system.
Anyway, to directly set LDAO, locate the Convert= setting in ldraw.ini
(it should be in the [LDraw] section). If it's not there, just add
it. The setting value is the directory where convert.exe is located.
On my system, it's something like this:
[LDraw]
Convert=d:\Apps\ImageMagick-4.0.9\

Hrmmm, I can still generate this error simply by giving it the path
d:\IM412\ for convert.exe

Yeah, I fixed it when I stopped trying to specify a directory
(incorrectly even) for the Step images. Dunno, but it works now, so
I don't care. :)
I need to keep paying more attention to lugnet.cad and the L-CAD
mailing lists - I can't wait to be able to call LDlite from LDAO.

| Is the entire IM directory needed, or JUST the convert.exe? I'd like to
delete all the rest if all I need is convert.exe, but I don't have the time
to remove a file at a time until something breaks. Right now, it works,
but that's an awful lot of wasted disk space.

Short answer: I don't know.
Longer answer: start moving files out of the IM directory tree, and see what
happens when you run convert.exe.
Have fun :)

If you're going use LDAO's HTML generator much, you might edit
HTMLGen.src in the LDAO directory. That file contains all the HTML
fragments used to spit out the .html files. I figured if I hard-coded
*all* the formatting, someone wouldn't like it.
There's more doc about the HTMLGen.src file at
<http://home.att.net/~blisses/htmlgen.html>.
