Aloha!

Here is my latest creation, the Tiki Bar!

It started out as a vignette, but it quickly grew out of hand! I was going to post this to vignette, as well, but didn’t want to get anybody mad... I figured it can’t be called a scuplture, and it isn’t complete enough to be a town structure. Perhaps we can start a new type of vignette, Maxi-Vig! Any thoughts?

I used to have my old apartment done up as a tiki lounge with Bamboo on the walls and the whole tiki bar and everything. Kinda always been fascinated with the whole 50’s-60’s tiki lounge thing ever since a group of us went to a classic 50’s Polynesian restauraunt(King Kwongs, in Salt Lake City)for prom back in 1988. Unfortunately it is no longer, like many of the classic Tiki bars.

I tried to recreate a small slice of this unique style in Lego and am pretty pleased with the results. It is lit up in 3 areas with the Lego electric system. The Bar is iluminated from underneath, the glass orbs hanging from the thatched roof of the bar, and the Tiki statue has blinking red lights in his eyes. There is a half wall of bamboo surrounding the room, with the top being a lovely teal blue color. The lovely Hawaiian waitress is serving the bars signature rum punch in a hollowed out coconut decorated with a imported tropical flower.

The Tiki statue is the part I think I like best. It is only 3 knobs wide, but i was able to get most of the details of a typical tiki statue to fit in the small space. There is a better detailed pic in my brickshelf gallery as well as one of the bar in regular light www.brickshelf.com/mwv1970

Let me know what you think!

thanks,

Bill Vollbrecht

(...) Bill, that is great! Lots of nice details, and the tiki works really well. I would forget about trying to squeeze it into any kind of vignette - I would rather call it a diorama. ROSCO (19 years ago, 3-Sep-05, to lugnet.build, FTX)

(...) Excellent MOC! Xposted to .vignette. For what it's worth, I'd say it could qualify for a vignette. Maybe we can call this a "Shoebox" vignette, as it is large and reminds me of those diorama(rama)s that we used to build while in grade school! (...) (19 years ago, 4-Sep-05, to lugnet.build, FTX)

(...) Bill - Looks great! I really love all the detail you put into it. I hope to see this in person if I can ever get to one of the meetings down here :) Mark (URL) (19 years ago, 4-Sep-05, to lugnet.build, FTX)

(...) Nice, Bill. I remember the christening party for your Tiki apartment. The overhead lights seem inspired from my theater portacauche. The link seems dead for now, but the available picture looks good. The big statue isn’t overwhelming. -Ash (19 years ago, 5-Sep-05, to lugnet.build, FTX)
