The seventh annual Southern California LEGO Train Club (SCLTC) winter show at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum
(SDMRRM) in Balboa Park in San Diego is now entering its
final weeks.
This years show features a city with skyscrapers, town, and a pirate cove with
a fleet of class LEGO pirate vessels. The large rail yard features a number of
trains that have appeared in RAILBRICKS. The center
piece of the layout is the clubs largest bridge ever, a 15 foot (4.6 m), 576
stud long suspension bridge with twin decks and 4 tracks. The LEGO cables (2x2
black cylinders) conceal actual steel cable rated to 230 pounds held under
tension by a ratcheting hold-down stretched under the tables. With 4 full trains
centered on the bridge the center sags less than 0.25 inch.
The show opened on Tuesday November 25 and will run through Saturday January 17.
The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 to 16:00 and Saturdays and
Sundays from 11:00 to 17:00. Admission is free for children under 15 and $6.00
for adults.
The San Diego Model Railroad museum is the premier model railroad museum in the
country and features a number of large layouts in various gauges. It is located
in the Casa de Balboa adjacent to the Fleet Space Theatre and the world famous
San Diego Zoo.
Pictures are posted. For an interactive 3D view of the layout, check out the
Microsoft Photosynth rendition and for a first person engineers eye view from
the cab, check out the YouTube video.

Tim-
David worked on Cobalt Plaza almost entirely with an eye to creating things that
other AFOLs would appreciate. I am sure that the fact that you and others picked
up on those details will please him. Thanks for the comments!
Here are some more images (posted on scltc.org yesterday). Ill try to find some
closeups of the firepit area, which I think is the most intriguingly detailed
section of the whole thing.
Certainly, the consumption of 1x4 dark red tiles was insane. Recently, he
arranged to get 3,800 more of them to expand it.

I saw this in person last week. Really great stuff.
I got quite a few ideas for building techniques from it.
Great job, All.
Rock on!

Wow, Ted! You guys sure do a nice job. It gives those of us in fledgling LTCs
something to aspire to! The bridge is duly impressive.

Actually, there IS a close up of the fire pit area (and the fountain) posted on
scltc.org. I just did not notice.

Ted:
The layout looks amazing...as always. I really love the work on Cobalt Plaza as
others have mentioned. This is really, really top notch stuff. Every time you
guys do a show, you always have amazing new stuff. I could spend hours just
perusing the SCLTC image gallery. :-)
One question though. Can you shoot me a link to the camcorder you used to
capture the video? With being able to turn it sideways on a train car, it must
be pretty small. I have an old (6 yrs give or take) Sony Digital-8 that is WAY
too big to turn sideways on a flat-bed car. I'm looking for inexpensive
alternatives.
Thanks,
Dave

Dave-
The posted video was taken by club member Robert Shurtz (you can contact him
directly via first_name@SLCTC.org). I recently purchased our first High
Definition video camera, a Sony HDR-SRll. We took it on a visit to the museum
and were able to jury rig a mount to a flat car. Its advantages are image
stabilization and HD. Oddly enough, the main complaint about this camera in
reviews on Amazon are ... that it's too big!
Thanks for your kind comments about SCLTC. It's always nice to know that one's
work is appreciated!
