I just wanted to pick this out as a really interesting idea. Something like
when I go to Amazon and it says "you've bought this, so maybe you'd like this
related item", Lugnet could say, "you seem to post in .castle a lot, here's the
latest highlighted posts from there" etc. Probably a programming nightmare,
though.
That said, I'm not so convinced this is such a problem. Yes, last week there
were three (oooooo) posts from the same gray/bley thread in the highlighted
post, but in response more people made the effort to highlight posts, and look
at the top list right now--there's one post by Jake announcing the rerelease of
the Maersk ship, but the other nine are all MOCs, ranging from a small town MOC
to a huge castle layout, two a couple of Star Wars creations. (Full disclosure,
one of my posts is currently spotlighted, so of course I think the system is
perfect. ;) )
Anyway, remember that it usually only takes a couple of spotlights to put
something from announce.moc in the top ten, so if more people made the effort to
flag cool creations, community events (fests, contests, etc), important product
or website announcements, etc, we wouldn't be having this discussion.
This last is also the main problem I see with the unspotlighting option
discussed downthread. If it often only takes a few votes to put something on
the top of the pile, it would similarly be very easy to bury it. Since most
forum members don't bother to use the feature, only a couple of negative members
could really affect things.

Here are some thoughts on how to minimise the "bad fun" effect. Maybe I am lazy, but I'm more (...) (20 years ago, 26-Jan-05, to lugnet.admin.suggestions)
