Thanks! All better now. I'm surprised that nobody else noticed, or at least
that nobody else spoke up about it. IMHO, the ability to add LUGNET/Brickshelf
sidebars to Nescape and Mozilla hould be something that is featured on the main
LUGNET page. Newbies or people who simply missed the announcement are missing
out otherwise. Which brings me to an issue I've wanted to address for a while
now...my criticism of the LUGNET homepage.
I think there are several things on the homepage that are not very useful and
some ommisions that would be helpful were they included. I'll start with my
opinion of some things I'd like to see go:
WHAT I'D LIKE TO SEE GO/MOVED
* The "Events" link
Not that it isn't neat to see what's happening in the various LEGO clubs and
organizations around...but this is really just a link to the lugnet.events
newsgroup. I think newbies might be looking for a more traditional "calendar
of events" that shows who, what, where and when something is scheduled in the
fan community.
* The "Shop" link and Brickwise pages
I just can't imagine that this is used very much. I am sure a lot of hard work
went into it and I think the Brickwise pages should be kept...but not linked
from the top linkbar on the site. Am I missing something? Is it really
that neat?
* The Crossword Puzzles
Don't get me wrong...these are neat...but it has grown really stale. And
newbies see it as one of the most important things on the page due to its
prominence, I think. See my idea for what to put in this position in the "What
I'd like to see" section below.
* "the friendliest place on the Internet." quote. This is really just a pet
peeve of mine. The reason that I don't like it is that I believe that quote
was originally used to describe rtl by rtl'ers and LUGNET sort of commandeered
it for its site. Even though rtl may no loger be "the friendliest place on the
internet," I'd hate to see the sentiment taken away from it in order for it to
be used elsewhere.
* The Minifig Generator
Actually, I quite like this, but haven't actually been able to get through to
it for some time. I always see the message, "This area is currently
unavailable due to heavy visitor traffic." If it's down frequently, shouldn't
it be taken off the main page? Or moved to a place where it would be more
accessible?
* The Fibblesnork Lego Survey/Fibblesnork Lego Guide
I think this is really dated an shouldn't be on the main page.
* LUGNET's set inventories
I would much prefer a link to the peeron.com inventories placed here.
WHAT I'D LIKE TO SEE
INTODUCTORY NEWSGROUPS PARAGRAPH
I'd like to see a short paragraph explaining what the newsgroups are and how to
view them right up near the top...where the crossword section is now. I think
the newsgroups are by far LUGNET's greatest claim to fame. A newbie might not
understand or even see that there is a welath of newsgroups linked from the
main page because there really isn't any explanation on this page of what the
newsgroups are/how they are structured and how important the newsgroups are to
the community. Maybe I'm just being thick, but I think more than one newbie
might not have followed the site deep enough to realize the scope and content
of the newsgroups on here.
REFERENCE/FUN THINGS HEADINGS FLIPPED
I love the content in the "Reference" section and think it should be more
prominent. Also, adding things like Dan's sidebar code here, a fix for the
Quickset utility (which I really miss being able to use) for Mozilla users,
adding the instructions for viewing .dat files through your browser would be
nice to see here as well as other nifty tools like LDView (or at least a link
to them). You don't have to want to read the .cad groups to want to see .dat
files, after all. Think of how much is being missed by newbies and casual fans!
A LIST OF FAQs
I know Cary Clark and others have been working feverishly on these. I think
they would be useful to have linked from the main page.
SOMETHING TO REPLACE THE CLSOTW
The main page needs fresh content on it and seeing a picture of original MOCs
is, IMHO, the best way to achieve this. Even a picture of "model of the month"
would be welcome.
Don't get me wrong...I love LUGNET. But I would like to see some changes to
the main page. Do members/admin agree/disagree?
